  • Help me choose 2 Heli's

Ok after quite a lot of searching and watching 100's of videos of them flying I have decided to plump for 2 heli's. I am after a micro one perhaps 170 - 200 mm span and also a 300-350mm span. I think realistically I am looking at a max of £60 each off ebay so new or 2nd hand. I have come up with the following list in each size. The smaller sizes seem to be limited to Walkera. So if you were after 2 heli's what would you go for? Please add to the list. (just to note I am happy to get something that may need some mods to get it flying perfectly!!)

    Small
    Walkera 54 360mm (2.4ghz)
Lama V3 340mm (found these cheap)
Bell 47 (if I can find one cheap enough)

    Micro
    Walkera 5/6 Genius 175mm
    Walkera 4/3 185mm

Any advice to get the best 2 for my cash would be appreciated. Thanks,

From all the posts on the forum, steer clear of Walkera.

I have also read a lot of good points, I agree for the larger size and will prob go for a Bell 47 if I can get one cheap if not its prob the Lama v3, I am more stuck on the smaller size circa 180mm and only walkera seem to offer a decent package.

Try the Twister Bell 47, it's much the same price new as the Lama I believe.

        Alternatively consider the Blade CX2...

found the lama for as low as £50 for the V3 4 channel. Sadly the bell is near £80 so I think I will go for the Lama, so that will be the mid size but really after a mico size a well!

why do you want 2 pretty similar sized heli's?

if u get a lama v3 and a 5/6 you've got 2 heli's that do he same thing. niether of them can fly outside and the lama v3 is small enough to fly in most living rooms!

so why not put the 2 £60's together and buy a blade cx2 which firstly, is a good heli that the motors wont burn out quickly (unlike some)

and you'll have lots of support on here and also spares are easy to get.

            thats what i would doo

            cheers,
            Tom

i guess having 2 would ensure I can fly during down times if as and when the other crashes, second I guess if I write one off fully! I know their ability will be somewhat the same but I am not after doing anything other than learning and just flying for a while and wont fly outside for a very long time.

Or blow it on Phoenix sim, you wont regret it, but you will need a TX as well.

Thanks for the advice so far, I may be able to spend a bit more than I thought! Most of the ones I have been looking at come with a sim! Really I am only looking at indoor flight and may perhaps fly in my garden on still days (my garden is very sheltered). AT this stage only after some fun and something which flys properly. Only have some reservations getting the blade as a 1st heli (just in case I don’t get on with it). So would prefer something slightly cheaper that I can either mod or sell to upgrade later. On the Lama vs the Bell 47, is the bell really worth the extra £40 or so? My idea was to use the Micro (max 200mm) indoors only and perhaps the bell or Lama in doors but also in the graden when I get brave!

I fly indoors quite a bit and I have a hopped-up hummingbird fixed pitch, with a few upgrades they fly incredibly well, are really chuckable and bounce off the walls quite well. When they hit the deck just clip the rotor head back on and off you go.

Although obsolete with century, GWS markets exactly the same heli as the mini-dragonfly. Spares are readily available and not needed after every crash, 2nd hand stuff is also on ebay.

If you want a 2nd opinion ask Cambs-Flyer, he has seen it fly and flown it too!

PS these are very similar to the walkers 54, but better quality, IMHO!

I can tell you the little hummingbird's/Dragonflys are most addictive, I've flown pip's a few times even had a head on wall strike which I found horrific, one minute lated after Micheal clipped the head unit back on she was as good as new.

In fact he's putting one together for me for when I go to the gym, to sum them up if you want a really good cheap flyer thats easy to control after Sim practice of course, and maintain, you can't go wrong, and as for fixing them on my second crash I attached the head back on myself, its that easy.

I'm looking forward to having my own to bomb about, plus there really cheap on the Li Po front so you can keep one going for ages with a good supply of batt's

I would also like to mention on my first flight I managed two circuts, Ok they weren't very pretty, but she was well in control.

Yes, It will be FMS which is a free download and honestly is c**p, get a proper one, then you can fly (and crash) hugely expensive Helis and planks at no cost.

Thanks for the advice, I have a Lama V3 (slightly modified with extreme shaft) and a Walkera 5-6 Genius on thier way. I looked on ebay and managed to get both for £96 in total. I thought at that price it was too good to turn down. Both are 4 channel and come with spare blades, extra batteries, Spare tail, Spare Body and spare motors so I should be well covered for parts for quite a while. The cost of both was way less than a new Blade and with the spare parts they should see me through the learning stage. I read a lot of reviews on both and watched 100's of videos of them flying to see how they perform and was pretty impressed. I will keep you updated on my progress, and no doubt will be asking tons of questions very soon!
