Do you know what? - don't bother.

If (and I mean if) you were doing anything like a decent hover with the old set then try hovering without. It's only after you have ditched the legs that you realise just how much harder they made hovering in the first place.
      Happy Landings.

+1 on the don't bother, they do tend to make the Heli do all sorts of crazy things, just tKe them off, find a nice smooth car park and try just getting it light and move forwards and backwards controlled and slow. One little tip, put your pitch curve on 0,46,48,50 if I remember rightly(someone will correct me), it will save the Heli sucking it's self to the floor when you panic and just shut the throttle sick down. Good luck

You can lean at any height, or more precisely - angle - you want! You should probably LEARN however about a metre off the ground. Below that and the heli will be blown all over the place by its own turbulence (ie. wind bouncing off the ground and coming back up into the heli).

If you're really at the stage of still skidding along the ground, then training legs may still be an advantage if you have a 450 or bigger.

Go buy a second hand MCPX or similar.

That is probably one of the best training aids you can get. You'll save the cost with one less crash of the 500. Great for learning hovering and basic forward flight. Crash it on grass and pick it up and fly again - repeatedly!
                      Happy Landings.

An awesome heli to learn on. A bit of a handful to start with but persevere and it will give the rewards. Its not everyones cup of tea but it helped me with hovering and control.
