  • Gyro Question.

OK, so far so good! After setting out to teach myself to fly a heli completely from scratch (thanks for the help from this forum!) this morning I flew the model (Twister 3D) for the first time without the training undercarriage. No real problem as I'd really practised with the training gear until it started to become second nature. The only snag is that since removing the training sticks, the heli really wags its tail quite badly. There was only slight movement before. I have the gyro (a JP HL800 unit that came with the model) set in normal - non head lock mode- and pretty much set to the default settings. This has been OK so far and I've been able to steer the model around the garden quite smoothly. I thought that the gain would need reducing but I don't seem to be able to stop the wagging. The gyro's sensitivity adjustment is via Ch5 and the % is set within the gyro part of the adv menu on my FF8. The gyro switches between HH and normal correctly on switch F. Can I tell if the gain is being affected at all on the bench? If I move the tail left and right the T/R seems to move at the same rate no matter where I set the gain figure. Is this a valid test?
I'd really appreciate some help on this one please.

Tail wag is the gain being to high normally as you thought. I dont think there is a way to set the gain on the bench (some one may correct me) you have to fly and set, trial and error. Normally in HH you up the gain to the point the tail wags then reduce slightly untill it stops. Out of interest why fly in rate mode? The only time I fly in rate mode is to setup the mechanics of my tail, really cant see the point of it otherwise, unless doing scale flying.

I'm not familiar with your FF8 but If you're not noticing a change using the gyro menu, try changing ATV's on CH 5. This may be the way to control gain.
Could be you've got the gyro menu inhibited.

Have to agree with Oli. Why fly in rate mode? Use it to set up mechanically then stick it HH and leave it.

The tail servo isn`t man enough for the job.
        Nowhere near fast enough.

Futaba 3153 holds them really well.
Flick the switch on the gyro to..Digital servo,
Mount the ball link 7mm from the centre of the servo and all will be fine.

I know it`s another £25, but is the best purchase you will make for it

Also, most heading hold gyro's have to be switched on in HH mode for them to set properly, once it has set then you can flick back into rate mode at your leasure. Oh, and don't move the heli whilst its setting or you can realy upset the gyro.
-I don't crash, I just land with enthusiasm.

A couple of 600n's with stuff on them that makes them fly..
A 550 fbl with even more stuff on it to make it fly
And a Mars 470 which needs stuff putting on it to make it fly

          And a DX8 too

Thanks gents, just come in from the garden and the heli is as stable as rock! Basically went through all the settings from scratch.

            Cheers
