    Hi All

I am a total noob tothe hobby - never flew a radio controled helicopter before.

I am seriously considering buying a model to start my hobby.

As a noob I thought about buying a cheap coaxial to learn the basics of flying. However, I did not think that this would keep me interested for long befoe I wanted to move to a single rotor helicopter.

I then started to look at single rotor helicopters for beginners. A friend of mine suggested I look at the Blade 450 3D, After doing some research, I think that would be too expensive and too complex for a starter machine.

I think I have found something that would suit me for learning to fly that is not too expensive and also would no be too much of a jump to a helicopter with Collective Pitch.

    The Blade 120 sr:

    BLH3100UK2 | BLADE 120 SR RTF UK MODE 2

    The Blade MSR:

    BLH3000 | E-Flite Blade MSR RTF

I thought that the 120 sr may be better for me if I ventured outside with it.

Now here comes the questions that must have been asked a trillion or more times on here: Which one? & why?

    Many thanks in advance

    Tony

Personally I would go for the blade mcpx and fix the pitch in your radio for starters. Then later when your happy flying it you can move on to CP at no extra cost. You can pick one up cheap as chips now- fly great outside and almost bullet proof over grass. I was going to go your route with an MSR but was told by a friend to bite the bullet and go straight for a CP heli so I did and in hindsight it was the best option. Get a good handful of batteries for it and you can spend more time learning to fly it than fixing it...

If you offer 70 to post you can then practice and move on to an mcpx bl.

I have been flying 5 years and i really enjoy my bl on a calm day.

        Kev thanks for the advice.

NickB - Thank you. The simulator is a great idea. After taking advice elsewhere, I think I will go for a 6 channel transmitter and a simulator.

Just got to source and buy the transmitter and simulation software now

        Cheers

Hi Tony. I saw you asked the same question on the public section of our (Phoenix Rotors) club web site. I've given a (long winded) response there.

FWIW, I would recommend neither - Either the mSRX (not the mSR), or these days, the perfect noob machine is I think the Blade 200SRX - with noob "Panic mode"

                +1 @ Tom
Bought this heli on Friday, Crashed Saturday (my fault straight in to expert mode) , replaced main gear, and been flying for a few hours today in intermediate mode, I have x3 Blade 120 sr's already which i love, But the Blade 200 srx is hands down the best and most fun heli i have played with, I been flying in around 10mph winds today and this thing is rock solid! It gave me so much confidence i was flying full collective most of the time doing circuits and i've only been flying for a few weeks on my 120's.
In a few more weeks hopefully after mastering this heli i can pull my Blade 450 3d out with loads of orientation skills at my disposal from the 200srx. I think this heli will be down the field with me everytime even if i have CP heli's there, as it is awesome to play around with.

Definetly the best heli on the market to learn on! and progress on, but wouldn't try flying it indoors, unless you have a massive kitchen/living room or sports hall better etc..

                  Tom / Andy

Thanks for bring this baby to my attention. I lke the fact that it has 3 modes: Beginner; Intermediate & Expert. The Panic button looks as if it would be invaluable for me.

I am ging to give this some serious consideration.

I can vouch for the 200 srx. Its an awesome bit of kit for a beginner ! Word of advice don't try to fly it in windy conditions like I did and it took off. Finally found it after 45 mins of looking lol.

200srx or 120sr ? Neither will be great in really windy conditions, but the 120SR is particularly bad. The 200SRX should be able to handle relatively light breezes.

Simulator and a trex 450 worked for me. Advantages being that it will last you as long as you are in the hobby and it can handle a breeze. Disadvantages are the initial outlay and the complexity of building and setting up a model for the first time. Crash costs are only related to how malcoordinated or impatient you are, so you should be a good judge of that, but they do need to be factored in to the time and cost you invest in the hobby!

Takes time whichever route you take even if you are the next Bert Kammerer!!
