  • What is wrong to cause my heli to strafe left?

    Hi,

I have a Buzz Fly CX, I've had one or two crashes with it but nothing major, the only thing I have had to replace is the tail truss as this got a bit bent and mangled (more because it's unbelievably delicate than the size of crash).

I am finding that I have a couple of issues.

    1. The Heli needs a LOT of trimming to stop it strafing Left Tail In

    2. Occasionally when moving quickly it appears that the Heli loses stability and the only way I can explain it is that it looks like the body is swinging round in circles using the top rotors as it's pivot point, it can get quite wild but luckily I've managed to catch it and bring it back under control. Is this normal or does it point to some sort of balance issue? Is there a proper term for this?

My Blades appear pretty unscathed although there are a couple of very minor chips along the leading edges on the top rotors, so minor you can barely feel them when you fun your finger over them.

Another thing I've been thinking is that I might be getting quite a lot of environmental affects in my living room. I have a Radiator the length of one wall and opposite this there is an open fireplace which can be a bit drafty and we have no double glazing so there's quite a lot of convection near the windows.

Anyway, if anyone can point me in the right direction of fixing Number 1 or 2 that would be great.

    Cheers

    Sean

it sounds like "toilet bowl effect" have a look at the flybar and make sure it is loose and free to move both ways! run it gently on a table and make sure the shafts are straight

Yup, it's loose it does look a tiny bit bowed downwards though, I;ve had a bit of a play straightening it out and it appears to have had a positive affect but it's still not 100%

Out of the box I had it hovering static solely with trim, now it wont do that it constantly moves around

these things are very delicate mate! chipped blades and a bowed flybar are going to have an effect! if you want a rock steady hover it all needs to be 100%
the buzz fly is actually quite a small contra so every small thing will be magnified!!!

Yeah i have the original buzz fly and although excellent fun it needs lots of tlc to keep it set up correctly.

Very satisfying when you get it running right though!!

Your not kidding, I was experimenting last night and a I could blow it half way across the room with just my mouth.

I'll switch the blades for the spares that came with it but I also need to block every draft in my living room.

            Masking tape time

Alternatively, you could just take the drafts, etc as part of flying, and work on flying around them. Depends how much problem it's causing you.

It's worth bearing in mind that that the rotors disturb the air loads, so you're going to get disturbed air bouncing back from walls, etc anyway. The air will probably never be still in a normal sized room.

BTW, I've got a 'conventional' BuzzFly (like Mark Lane). I can see the benefit of proper trimming and fettling, but I suspect I do much less than he does. I've found it quite flyable when really quite out of shape. Quite fun, and possibly good practice. Depends what you're trying to do.
