i just had a similar problem with my starter. It was a protech one, had it for a few years but i didnt really hammer it or anything. Didnt get used that much really. Anyways i thought it was a gel cell battery prob at first and turns out it was the starter itself. The motor must be failing on it with wear. I went out and bought a sullivan dynatron starter and instantly noticed the diffrence in torque compared to the crappy protech one. Alot of money for a starter but definately worth it. Moral of the story is anyways... it probably is your starter if you cant see anything else wrong. I kept telling myself it wasnt the starter but as soon as i tried the new 1 i knew straight away. This only happened recently also.
Cheers

Nope, definatly not the starter, I went to the hobby store today and compared what i thought was a weak starter agains the ones they had there and they were very similar. Its Got to be something more serious.
whats the battery like your plugging it into? If it aint the battery then its definately something up mechanically on the helicopter. Something must be rubbing like the fan on the shroud or something similar.
