  • Third Flight........First Crash!!!

I received my Trex 450 almost 3 weeks ago. I decided that patience would be a virtue and practiced daily with the Phoenix flight sim. In between times, I levelled the swash plate, checked the pitch on the rotors, checked that all the screws were secure, charged the Lipo’s and fitted the training gear.

I seem to have mastered hovering on the Phoenix sim, tail in and nose in so
I decided to ‘bite the bullet’ and take the helicopter for a first flight (in my garden).

I didn’t realise how much the ‘fear factor’ could affect performance. Each time the heli left the ground I plonked it back down again, worried that it might just fly off never to be seen again. The effect was like a giant grasshopper jumping along the grass. I eventually got it in the air and hovered for some time. As confidence grew I started moving the heli around the garden, never more than 6 feet off the ground.

My second flight was similar without the grasshopper impression. A few minutes into my third flight a gust of wind took the heli up to about 15 feet, panic set in and I had a tail strike against the corner of the house. New blades and a Tail Pitch Assembly ordered…..and so it begins!!!

I have adjusted my pitch and throttle curves; I should have done this beforehand, it might have helped a little, but this is one big learning curve for me.

A bit of wimpy impact but I thought I would share my first crash experience with you all!!

Get yourself to a decent field mate, you'll be much less likely to crash as you'll have more room to correct the heli if you lose yourself for a moment.

Also remember that when the wind blows over & around buildings, it is mighty turbulent on the downwind side - its a good place for an 'interesting' flight.
      Good luck with it all!

Thanks Shauny, I should have said that the garden is about quarter of an acre and almost all lawn, with farmers fields on two sides. It should have been plenty of room to work with, but I still managed to hit the only brick structure in view.
