  • Raptor 30 newbie engine starting problems

Got everything set up on my Raptor yesterday, fuelled it and just thought I'd start it in the back garden (without the blades) for a while, make sure everything was ok, battery drill starter is sufficient, throttle cut out works etc. etc. All fine.

Today, I put the blades on (and training gear) but can i get it to start? Well, I did on tickover for quite literally a few seconds but now it just will not go. I've taken the glow plug out, checked that it glows against the battery, turned the engine over a few times in case it was flooded, I just don't know what to try now? Any suggestions please?

Also, it says in the engine manual to drain the tank, run some oil through it every so often but I'm using a fairy liquid bottle to get the fuel in, is it necessary to drain it after every time i use it?

    ta.

Yes you should drain the tank! also you should run the engine dry after a days flying as fuel is wonderful at knackering bearings if you dont run the engine dry!

I assume its the standard TT39 engine.
If so to start mine prior to connecting the glow stick I always open the throttle slightly, blank the exhaust with my finger and turn over on the starter a few times until I can see the fuel moving along the fuel line to the carb. Connect the glow heat, shut the throttle and after a few second of waiting crank over the engine. from cold in the morning for the first start I always give the glow a little longer and find this helps.

            Thanks guys.

I now understand why blanking the exhaust works - pressure from the engine pushing fuel into the carb.

Yes, am using the drill in reverse.

Why should i avoid running the engine with no blades? - Not enough pressure against the engine? It says in the engine book to run the engine in on a bench before using it in the heli. I haven't run it without the baldes since.

As it turned out, the problem was that the feed from the top of the fuel tank had come off and was lying loose in the bottom of the tank because the pipe had split! Problem now solved - thanks!

One final questions - what setting should i have the main needle on? There should have been a data sheet with the engine but there isn't! Is it simply a case of running on different settings until there is not too much smoke - and not too little?

Welcome to the world of RC Heli's I am no expert, but one site i can recommend is this one:

              http://www.raptortechnique.com/

Its not updated as much these days, but everything that is already there is very relevant to you and your progression in this hobby. It has helped me no end.

There is a good section there about Engine Tuning.

              Hope this helps some

not so sure of the answer to running the engine with no blades, i presume it somthing to do with no load on the engine and over running it,

can get head loadsers for engines to setup the engine with the danger of the heli taking off.
