  • Raptor 50 V2 beginner/intermediate?

Hello, I'm looking at a Raptor 50 V2 to progress from Blade 120sr. Am I taking on too much I wonder. Looks like a lot more Heli to set up and manage than 120sr. Any advice greatly apreciated.

The raptor is a great heli But yes it is a huge jump from a 120sr!
my path was similar however I had the support of a great bunch of pilots at my local club to check setup help with engines and support while learning to fly!
she is still going strong being used by another club member who is trying Nitro and loving it!
best of luck and happy landings.
lots of good advice on here too.

          Couple of questions

Where are you going to fly it. What upgrades does it have? The stock raptor had lots of key parts like the rotorhead in plastic it can cost a lot to get it up to scratch so its worth checking.

Also check for wear as it might have a lot of miles on the clock.

What engine, muffler, servos and gyro does it have?

Its a jump but lots of people started on 50size models but with a good simulator and the right help or just a lot of research there is no reason that a raptor 50 won't last you a good amount of time unless you are considering becoming the next Duncan Osbourne!

Thanks for the input folks. The person selling it says it's pretty much brand new. I've asked about any upgrades. My budget is tight also and this comes with transmitter. Mds engine 50s radio is 35mhz and gyro is sl420 smart lock system. He wants 280 euro. I know a 450 might be easier to progress on but I can probably keep practicing on the 120sr aswell.

I still have my rappy 30 v2 but well upgraded to a 50 ,quick uk upgrades .it served me well .I havent flown it for a couple of years but just cant bear to get rid of it .Hopefully someone will be with you to give you some pointers and help set it up for you. There are two different setups on the servo links from what i remember, novice and 3d and i think when i first started i had +9 and -5 on the pitch but it wont be long before you move up to a more normal 3d setup.

You won't go wrong with a raptor. I learn't on a raptor 30 which I later converted to a raptor 50 and still fly it regular today. Thay are easy and cheap to repair but the main thing being that they "bounce" well when you crash, by that I mean that compaired to say a TREX600 generally less parts break when you crash. Yes it is a jump and I would strongly advise to either get somebody to set it up that knows what thay are doing and join a local club if possible. I hope this is of some help. Cheers Dave

Ok its sounding like an ultra budget heli,

                      mds engine is scrap,
you will replace the radio pretty soon, did he say make/model of the radio?
the CSM sl420 was junk, a pain to setup and rarely worked well even in the hover especially if the engine wasn't running right (see previous comment about the engine)
My bet is the servos are very low spec cheapies too, especially the tail servo.

I know budget is tight but equally you don't want to be wasting money on components that you will end up replacing to get a flyable model.

                      sorry!

                      Ade

(PS waiting for somebody to say "i have a sl420 with a futaba 148 servo and it works fine" .... theres always one!)

Yeah sorry if that was a bit blunt.

Trying to convey the gravity of how much buying a second hand heli with crap components can cost.

The components are a much higher proportion of the cost than the airframe and requires that level of attention

I'm am currently helping out a newbie at our club who bought a Rappy 30 off the well known auction site as his first heli and without asking anyone first. Its been very frustrating for him trying to learn how to fly with it as the heli had been kitted out with a cheap 35mHz Sanwa radio, analogue Sanwa servo's throughout and a dodgy clone 401 gyro, plus it had not been set up right, so was almost unflyable due to severe swash plate interactions. He paid over £250 for it but it has already cost him at least another £200 to buy a Spektrum Dx6i and receiver, three new Futaba S3152 servos for the swash and a full set of bearings etc. Still more money is needed to sort out the gyro and tail servo, so my advice would be to get someone who knows to give it a good look over before you buy it.
