  • Newbie MCPX unable to hover without major input

Apologies if this question has been asked to death.

So I have dived in head first as a beginner and bought a V2 MCPX with a DX6i. Have no problems to an extent hovering on Phoenix but when it comes to basic hover for real I constantly have to work on the pitch and yaw.

When I take off the real heli wants to pitch forward and yaw to the right. I have read about people being able to hover with nearly no input but this could not be further from the truth with my MCPX. I am able to hover but this is with me working the sticks constantly to keep it from hitting anything. If I increased the throttle and nothing else it would pitch forward and to the right and crash.

Don't get me wrong I know I am a beginner but I am sure my heli is not doing what it should be doing.

Can anyone please shed any light on my problem as I am getting much better on Phoenix but lose confidence the minute I try to hover my MCPX

if it is any help I can take a video of what is happening.

Thanks for all your help, it's much appreciated.

Did you buy from new or second hand?

The yaw issue (tail coming around) - how much yaw are we talking? For example, a few degrees drift over a min or so, or a severe tail letting go and say 90 degrees quickly?

The forward movement is almost certainly that the swash isn't level. You can level it by popping the links off from the servo and adjusting their lengths by screwing or unscrewing the plastic links a turn or two.

Ps. Real life does always need some input. The sim is very misleading in that respect. But a well trimmed heli, put into a perfect hover, should be able to be flown hands off for maybe 10 seconds. Not easy though.

        Hi Tom,

        Thanks for your reply.

the heli is brand new from Steve Webb models. It has already been back in as the pcb was bust, which was fixed under warranty.

I think I may have the yaw wrong, the heli is leaning to the left when I start the rotors up to which I have to apply right hand aileron stick to keep the blades from hitting the floor before I have even taken off.

Should I buy a levelling plate to level the swash or is it trial and error?

Re the hover for 10 seconds, if only I could. I would be very pleased indeed.

Thanks you for all your help

        Pete

Also occurred to me ... How high are you hovering? Below a certain height ( about 70 centimetres I'd guess for an mcpx), the heli will get blown about in its own downwash. Some people call it ground effect, but it's not really ground effect as understood by fixed wing pilots.

When you plug in the battery on the heli you must put it immediate on a flat/level surface for the gyros to initialise correctly ... a heli will lean on one side due even in a hover due to the forces at play ... they hover wonky

Make sure you're not using any sub-trim or trim on the transmitter as the controllers see this as input not as corrective ... Lifting off the deck slowly will have the heli skitter around a little as its not particularly stable on the deck

                +1 on that.

Assuming it is set up correctly - and that needs checking

Letting it initialise for a few seconds is vital otherwise it will want to 'correct' itself. And, get it off the deck quickly as hesitating at the point of lift-off with often cause it to tip. Don't use cyclic until you have 'caught it' in the air.

Harder to describe than it is to do!

Fingers crossed the weather is decent lol. Hope to see you there. Would it be a wise idea to get a swash leveller prior to Sunday if I can?

I'm not sure if you can get a swash leveller for such a small heli, but you can use a zip tie to level the swash. Tie it around the main shaft and as you turn the main gear the zip tie will travel over the top or the swash plate so see if it is level. A bit of a crude way but it's better than nothing. Or as us Yorkshire folk say, owts better than nowt lol!
                        Cheers,
                        Grant.

+1. The micros realistically are too small for leveller tools. Not worth it either.

My advice would be send it back. This machiene should hover very well out of the box. If it didnt then somthing is wrong and you should not be the one fixing it. However if you decide to have a go the best way to check swash level on a micro is to set the blades next to one another and eyeball the angle make sure to do this in at least 3 diffrent positions. This same method can be used to check end point travel. Hope this helps pm me for pics if needed
