  • Beginner DIY Kit

    Hey all,

I have been looking through the forum at all your great advice about getting started with model helicopters and I was wondering if you could recommend a 'build it yourself' kit for a beginner? I'm 24 if that makes a difference.

What I'm looking for is a project that will take me a while to build and then hopefully I will be able to improve over time. Part of the thrill of flying it for me will be knowing that I built it and that it wasn't a simple task of just clipping bits together and then away I go. I'm not looking to spend massive amounts of money because I know I'm going to be bashing it around for a long while while I learn.

I've read your thread for people looking for their first helicopter and although its very informative, it appears to be for a pre-assembled helicopter, which is not really what I'm looking for.

Hope I'm not being too demanding.

    Hi

If money is tight but you still want to build a decent Heli, have a look at the Trex 450s.

I believe www.trexmad.co.uk do a package with a Spektrum DX6i which is just over £300 but is complete.

Would be a great starter package.

Do be aware that the small 450 size Heli's are a nightmare to learn on without a lot of patience and a good training undercarriage.

If you have a bit more money, go for a Glow powered Heli and join a club.

Raptor 30, Sceadu Evo 30 are good Heli's. Also have a look at 50's if you have a bit more money.

Unfortuantely, anything under £300 seems to be pre-built so may not be what you want.

    Cheers

Unfortunately for you the stuff that is good for leaning on like the blade cx2 is pre built and ready to fly. Even a lot of the bigger stuff has the major components built for you. There is still a fair bit to do tho.

Building your own heli is really satisfying and can be done by most beginners with just a little advice on threadlock and cyano.

The real probem comes when it's time to set it up, it's something which just cannot be done well by a beginner to the hobby.

The best advise you can get is to find a good club, go and talk to them, find out what they fly and recommend.

When you've bought and built it you can take it along to the the club, they will check it over and get you started with a hovering setup.

The first step though is to get along to a club find the instructor and have a chat.

Thanks for all the great advice everyone

Think my best bet is probably to follow exactly what is specified in your beginner thread, get myself a blade CX2 and give it a go. Once I've mastered that then I'll go onto something more expensive that I can break

Would you recommend some good 'intensive' upgrades that I could do with the CX2 that would make it 'my own'?

            Thanks again,

            Dave

I know you say money is a bit tight, but whatever you do invest in Phoenix Sim as well, itll save you it's cost and some in the long run. Don't know about 'intensive' upgrades, but some lights can look nice on the CX2.... Hunt around the net for them, there's several available, and there's several bodies available nowadays for the CX2 either from E-flite themselves or from a couple of third party builders. One tip I will offer, don't be tempted by the ally swash plate, I'm sure it's what screwed mine up. It's coming off at the weekend.

You can adjust the servo linkages to make it more responsive, and wind down the gain on the gyro. Both zero cost, both will noticably change the handling.

A motor heat-sink is ~£5. Debatable whether it's necessary or helpful, probably the latter.

You can upgrade the Tx to a DX6i or DX7, or possibly others. This isn't so cheap, but they feel better than the stock one, allow you to twiddle settings, and you can use these Txs with subsequent models.

Of these, I reckon the first (free) suggestion is the most useful. The BCX2 is shipped set up for 'anyone to fly', and the controls are quite restrained as supplied.

I went out and had a look at the CX2 and realised that it wasnt really what I was looking for, so I bought a Mini Pred 3D v2. Please tell me that I did the right thing?

I set it up last night, plugged the battery in and gave it a bit of throttle, it definately works but I woosed out of taking off, need a bit more room. When it attempted to take off it seemed to be pulling forward a bit more than up so I think it needs some further adjustment

Your probably going to hear quite a lot of negative comments about the mini pred on here.
The limited experience I have of Century heli`s is pretty much all bad.

Doesn`t meen you can`t learn on it, just that there are better options out there.

                      Get a decent sim.

                      Go to www.bmfa.org
Find a club local to you.
Get down there and get as much help and advice as you can.

This forum is superb for advice, but for set up and test flying, you need first hand help.

Ah well, guess I'll have to make the best of what I've got

Can anyone recommend me a good book/dvd that I can learn to fly by? I've had a look at that site and there aren't any clubs in my immediate area.

                          Thanks
