  • Whats the verdict?? - Run Futaba bls451's on 2s lipo without reg or not??

    Hi Guy's

I'm looking for some advice on the 451's without a regulator!
Plenty of guys have done it in the past and just wondered what effect if any this has had on the servos over a set period of time?
People have also said that Futaba had changed the rating for the servo to 8v but I fail to see it anywhere??
I'm obviously prepared to fit a reg if needs be - but would rather put the money toward the fbl unit instead if not required.

don't really want to go down the LiFe route either!

Some info on this would be great as most of the stuff i'm coming across is outdated 2010 stuff and would like to get more up to date comments
after it having being tried and tested

    Thanks for now........

I was in the same boat as you a little while ago and most of the responses I got here at RC Heli Anonymous pretty much said the same thing that I would be pushing my luck running 2s lipo direct to them, over on the Freak it was a little more of a mixed bag some say yay some say nay, very confusing! They will work but maybe not as long as they should do or as long as you want them to from what I made of it. They are awesome servos from what I've read and been told here and will run till the cows come home at 6.6V.

The lifespan comparison I read on the Freak or RR, can't remember, was funny and was something along the lines of "Well at 6v they last like forever so at 8v they'll last a bit less than that". If you are somewhat clairevoyant and can ensure your heli is on the ground before the servos fail I'd say go for it, otherwise run a reg (Gryphon Vega was recommended to me) probably the cheapest option unless you have a charger which does LiFe or go LiFe or HV servos! Is it worth the risk of killing your model indirectly and unexpectedly just for the sake of saving a few quid? I didn't want to go the LiFe route either so I went HV, my bank balance suffered for it as did my sex life for a week or two (no, I don't have to pay her for it) but I have piece of mind that the electronics are solid.

I guess if they are going on a cheap to repair heli (if there is such a thing) it doesn't matter so much. Or if r/c heli field ploughing is your thing and you know you will be replacing them and most of the heli every couple of weeks then go for the 451's!

Robbe were the ones that originally published the higher voltage ratings.

      Brushless-Servo 451 MG - Brushless-Servos (BLS) - Servos - RC Fernsteuerungen

They suggest around a 30% reduction in servo life at 2S.

Thanks guys! - Tony the link you refer to is exactly the type of thing i'm reading about from a while back!
How had these guys gotten on with it?? did they end up planting them or was it all good - no worries??
Is it just a case of buy a reg and have piece of mind? or go for it without as its been tried and tested??.... that's the question!

          Cheers,

          Peter.

I have BLS 451's on my TDR = 150+ flights

            Goblin 700 =120+ flights

            T-Rex700N =250+ flights

Synergy N5/N5c =150+ flights between the 2 airframes

All on 2s lipo or 7.2V reg, and ZERO issues.

Is that enough testing for you

Wish you'd replied on my thread a couple of months ago Rob... could have saved me a few hundred quid lmao! Ahh what the heck 255HV's will have to do. It will be nice to know when that when I plant it I can swap 'em out for cheaper ones. Definitley going to put 451' s on the 50 though now.
