  • Interceptor 400 main gear and general Teeth information

    Hi Guys,

I'm still quite new to flying, but I do notice that I am going through a lot of main gears on my Interceptor 400.
it's a 138T main gear with a one way bearing pre-fitted. The motor gear is 14T(3.17mm) according to the instructions.
I want to upgrade, can I use the Trex 450 sport V2 main gear or will it not fit. it is only 121T (no idea if that is a bit no no).
Happy to but a new pinion to go with it.
Would it be possible to use the slanted teeth main gear?

Many questions I know but I'm grinding my teeth over it!

    Cheers

    Ross

HI what do you mean going through main gears i have had the same gears on mine for over a year now with no problems , if the teeth are wearing out maybe you havnt got the meshing
of the motor and the gears correct,

I have replaced the main gear three times in the last year.....meshing could be possible, a friend has had a look at it and it doesn't seem to be out of sync with it. Any tips on what I should be looking for when meshing the two.

Simplest method is to run a small strip of paper between the pinion and main gear- paper strip should be nicely ridged without cuts and the paper should move easily just by moving the main gear,,I also use silicone based spray just to make things move along smoothly.

ok cool thanks, I'm still left with a slightly toothless main gear though.. Will a gear with less teeth be ok if it is the same diameter?
Diameter of mine is 7cm 138t with a 14t pinion. If I use the 121T trex 450 one with a 12t pinion would if still rrun ok?

If it will fit on your mainshaft, the Trex 121 t gear and 12t pinion will give very similar gearing so should work without any trouble.
You must get the mesh right though, as advised above. You should be able to feel the tiniest amount of backlash, the thickness of a piece of paper. Half a millimetre is too much. Silicone or PTFE based lubricant is also a good idea.

Well it turns out that when the heli arrived at mine rtf there was a washer missing on top of the main gear allowing for 2mm of travel.
As an upgrade I have installed the blade 400 main gear and a)it fits perfectly and b) does not require the washer, job done.
