  • Nick in the root of blade

Made a hash of an auto today (still learning )

I got off lightly with just a bit of dirt, mains cut some grass but the tails must have folded.

Hopefully the pic is attatched, would you bin them or keep them for spare, if it was the tip I wouldn't be questioning it I'd CA it up and keep flying them but as it's the root I'm not so sure.

Im swapping out the bolts that hold the grips on just as a precaution too, bearings are all good still too.

I'd use them. Just check the don't crack or make odd noises when you twist them.

I did the same to the tail blades on my Fusion 50 in 2011 and I'm still using them.
Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.

If there's no other damage those nicks don't look too bad to me. You could get some KBDDs for practising autos and not risk the nice Rails

The strong part of the blade is the leading edge rather than trailing. I have a number of pairs of blades which have had quite big nicks or even cracks in the trailing edge which I have filled with epoxy and then sanded. Still fly perfectly and none have ever worsened or failed in flight.ImageUploadedByTapatalk1402897648.425830.jpg

Those little nicks will be fine.. only thing you need to check is that the blade itself hasnt delaminated... so just apply some gentle twisting force on the blade.. if it holds firm and makes no weird noise its good.. if it twists and makes a noise then its no good.

Hi - how do you sand them without sanding some of the blades as well? Do you use a file or just sandpaper?

I've done much worse loading my helis into my car.

Sheryl made a good point, kbdd tails are great for auto practice. You can cut trenches and not damage the blades.

Inevitable you will sand some of the blade but that doesn't matter too much. Just don't make a buggers muddle of the epoxy as once it's set it is pretty hard to sand. This split I epoxied and then used a curved file as it was a good fit for the curve of the blade root and then some very fine sand paper.

I wouldn't recommend this for splits in the outer parts of the blade. Just at the trailing edge of the blade root where it catches the main grips in hard landings/autos.
