  • Paddles

After having owned and flown (on and off) my Vibe 90 for 2.5 years now in stock setup (albeit apart from a Quick UK flybar cage), I've finally decided to start tinkering with the setup and see if I can make it fly more to my liking.

I bought a pair of standard JR Sylphide paddles (about £23ish) to replace the K&S black ones that have always been on my machine along with a set of flybar weights. They arrived today and I stuck them on quickly before going for a fly with one out of the two available weights in each paddle and took off the old flybar weights completely. The new paddles are thicker, blunter and with a much greater surface area, and (at a guess) about the same weight as the previous ones.

All I can say is Wow! What a difference. Better hovering already and man does it stonk through the air in a straight line!

I've long known that often the cheapest and simplest way to change the flying characteristics of a heli is to change the paddles, since they don't have to cost a lot and can easily be changed at the field, but I am just amazed at how much difference it's made this time.

Of course we can always change dampers and flybar ratios and mixing ratio and all that stuff, but it's always struck me that paddles make more of an impact than anything else, and they don't have to be expensive either. I sometimes wonder just what 'extra' a set of carbon paddles will give me over an identical set of plastic ones? Paddles are short and stumpy, no matter which ones you buy, and as such cannot bend or flex much in flight, so where does the added rigidity offered by carbon paddles have any effect? I suppose carbon paddles could be lighter (just a bit maybe) than their plastic equivalents, which has its pros and cons depending on the flying characteristics (i.e. 3D or FAI) you're after, but is it enough to make a noticeable difference? There are some quite expensive 3D style paddles available (i.e. Stubz) and some equally as expensive FAI paddles as well (i.e. Rotortech).

I suppose what I've witnessed this evening is exactly what I've always known and have promoted many times on this forum before, but what has amazed me is just the amount of difference it has made this time.

    Happy daze.

    It's amazing, isn't it?

I was distinctly unimpressed by my Beam E4. When tamed down to my skill level, it felt really mushy around centre stick, and the rotor disk would tip up in the slightest wind. After so many reports of how good the heli was, I was gutted.

Unsure what to do, I replaced the supplied paddles with the Gorilla paddles from my previous 450. It made the Beam a completely different helicopter. Stable even in 10mph winds. Am now very happy!

The relationship between paddles, fly-bar length and fly-bar ratio is a very complex one. When you hit the "sweet spot" the results are quite astounding!

I've seen Mark demonstrate a set up where the helicopter wouldn't budge from the spot - hands-off - when a gust hit it! It just bobbed up and down a bit, but didn't move off the spot! Quite amazing!

Sounds good. I've got the stock CF ones on my 600 that came with the kit. They are a bit on the slim side. Perhaps I should look at fattening them up a bit?

Thin, sharp paddles tend to give you a snappier response - which is what most 3D pilots want - but also tend to make the model "pitchy" in fast forward flight.

Really you have to experiment until you find something that suits your flying style.

Remember that weight and flybar length are also part of the equation!

But its worth experimenting, because the results can be quite surprising!

Yeah.... feed them lots of chocolate and some rhubarb crumble and thick cream.... that'll fatten them up (well it does me....)

To get back to OP... I have a great pdf that I found that explains various options and effects with paddles - hope this helps.

As you have made two changes at once I'm not sure you can be sure as to what has had the most impact on the model. Just my observation.

Not really two changes - the K&S paddles with the flybar weights are about the same total weight as the Sylhphide paddles with one weight in, so the weight has stayed approximately the same, just the paddles size, shape, profile etc has changed with the new ones.

I changed the paddles on one of my knights as the stock ones are thin and long and like Pete said was not nice to fly for my flying style .. Changed em to Raptor black ones and really like them .. Going to try some green ones me thinks and can always change them back if I dont like them ...
