  • Carbon v's Woodies..

I've been running woodies for the last month (as long as I've been flying it) on my Raptor 30. The white plastic film covering split in several places yesterday whilst flying, so I took them back to Hobby Hangar who were as excellent as normal and credited me for them.

I bought some JP carbons instead. I've just test flown it and I'm going to say a real newbie sort of thing here....they are completley differant to fly with...Will someone tell me if this is normal ??? They are quieter and my flying seems much more accurate, to be exact, my hovering seems much more accurate. It is a completley still night, but my landings were inch perfect...Is this down to the stiffer baldes?

    Any comments gratefully received..

I have just put some carbon blades (maniacs) on my Raptor 30 after flying woodies for the past few months. I dont notice a huge difference to be honest with you. I am sure when flying the heli more aggresively the difference will be noticed.

Like you said the main difference i found was the noise.

"Midnight sun" has really got the right idea about this forum, and aidi is a bit out of step.

I fitted <insert name of expensive upgrade> and my heli is so <insert suitable phrase such as smooth/ballistic/on rails/responsive> . I can't beleive I didn't buy one sooner

where's my credit card? I'm sure there is a pre-order list for something I need...

Carbon blades - as soon as you are flying about and thinking about doing a loop then fit them. For hovering if the difference you see is really there, then the woods have made you a better pilot.

Had to laugh at this, "aidi being out of step" Sounds like my drill Sgt back in my training days!! Never could keep the step.. seems like old habits die hard!

And i couldn't make head or tails of Moyesboy's post either!!

I'm doing a fair bit of 3D stuff (flips, long dives, lots of rolls, full pitch vertical travel etc) and I'm still using woodies, although this is on my 450. It seems fine but I have a few woodies to go through before moving to CF .

Wonder why they're quieter, I mean the woodies have a coating on them to reduce drag like the CFs perhaps it's because the woodies flap more?

I noticed CF's make a different noise in some high pitch manoeuvres.

Have to be carefull mate with the woods, you could get a boom strike and then it would be all over, if you are flying like that, get some carbons on.

What moyesboy means is that helis are all about buying the latest and greatest upgrade/heli/blade, not settling for what you have. This is why old gits like me that are average flyers (I hope!) buy the latest 3D machine then fly it to around 20% of its abilities.

At most flying fields I'd hazard a guess that few heli's don't have some sort of additional bling fitted that replaces plastic parts that performed perfectly well in the first place with the owners convincing themselves it fly so much better

Trust me mate, I've been full pitch forwards in a 45o dive and then whacked it around in a banked turn on the spot!! I don't think anything will happen .

Although I really should switch to CF's...

Thanks for your concern though, must be different with 450's.

Edit: All my heli is plastic other than metal frame etc! woot! I have a full metal replacement head etc but just don't see the need, I can do all the 3D stuff without it just as you say.

I agree, i still run the plastic blade grips on my nitro trex doing 3D, but i had a boom strike on my 450 with woods when i first flew it, went straight out and bought a set of vblades
