    Bearing Failure

    15-04-10

I suspected that the one way was starting to let go. After close examination i found the bearing has failed.

Apparently this has been reported by some folks with the common denominator being a 6.0 gear ratio. That is the ratio i am using. 14 tooth pinion + 84 tooth main. I am awaiting a 90 tooth main gear.

A replacement oneway has been ordered from Midlands .

    Regards

Sorry to hear that. My friend has also had two one way bearings fail. The original and then another supplied by a bearing supplier (non model) commercial.
I believe that is not the gear ratio but simply the tight spot on the gear mesh, not helped with the fact that some of the original gears are not round, check the holes where they are counter sunk and see if some are closer to the edge of the gear than others. Mine did not look too bad.

      Regards,

      Mark.

                  Bearing Failure

                  17-04-10

The bearing that sits on top of the clutch pinion (CNBB1015 10x15x4) failed. This bearing needs to be of the best quality as it is put under major stress!

Also changed the bearing on the starter shaft CNBB513 (5x13x4)

I ordered the replacements from: RCbearings.co.uk, For a friction free RC!

                  Replacements:

                  1 ea. 10x15x4 (CERAMIC MS) Bearing (x1) MR6700czz £2.79 1 ea. 5x13x4 (CERAMIC MS) Bearing (x1) MR695czz £2.99

These bearings were considerably cheaper and are of higher quality.

I will update on there usage.

I think it's bound to be just a little 'teething trouble' as it is a new model and these are the first kits getting out there. I'm sure they'll sort out the issues. Lots of new helis have had problems in the early kits that were not foreseen but were dealt with and overcome and are regarded as solid models now.

It is such a joy to fly. I will be flying again this Thursday (weather permitting )

I have flown many helis and i can tell you this is a nice one. I keep everyone updated on all the issues that i have . its like a review

                          Update
Added extra line into tank so could fill + empty properly.

I flipped the top bearing block 180 degrees and added an extra ball race + collar.

So the top bearing holder now contains 2 ball races.

                          From the top:

                          Mast collar (red)
Top bearing holder (with 2 bearings)
                          Special shim ( HW6045B 15X18)
                          Thrust race (original)
                          Lower mast collar (original)

Main shaft has slipped 1mm after pitch pumps so must re-tighten.

                          Flights

                          24-04-10

Mixed fuel today. Couldn't find my 1L bottle of semi-synth oil . So i used my Castrol TTS fully synth @ 32:1

                          Flight report:

weather = 14deg cent + 15 mph winds bit gusty.

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros.

Had to re-tune due to different oil. Engine ran fine on the semi-synth. Head is set up for 3D. I will change the ratio as i dont like the "feel" of it. It feels un-balanced for my style. Blades became a bit noisier. I think it was the covering it had sagged. Will fix with a hair dryer .

The cyclics are pretty quick on this heli. Turns and flips are so tight. Discovered up + down play in main shaft. I did lots of pitch pumping today. The collar slipped approx 1mm.

                          Enjoyed the flights today

                          More to follow...

Leaned top slightly so ran better

Running 85mm plastic tail blades and have great taol authority

                            Flight report:

5 flights today. Hard cyclic moves. Really need a gov as i bogged it a few times. I setup the mixing on the head for sport/3D and it feels more "balanced" for me

I tried to record the action but its a no go

I got over confident and got lower and lower.

Yep you guessed it.... I was doing rolls at 3ft and the ground hit me HARD

                            Parts list:
                            Blades (woodies )
                            Main shaft
                            Feathering shaft
                            Boom
                            Tail Hub
                            Tail Output shaft
                            Canopy mounts
                            Skids
                            Main gear

Not too bad. It really hit hard!!!!

The heli was going so well. It really is a pleasure to fly. However it desperately needs a gov. I will be fitting the GV-1 with the Spektrum backplate sensor.

I have ordered the 620 blades + 90T main gear so i will have a gear ratio of 6.42. This woll suit the heli better and allow the engine to function properly without too much loading .

I will let you know how it goes but you know what?????? so far i'm loving it

Ouch! I bet it also made that terrible crunching thud sound when helis hit the ground.

But I have to wonder, what is this fascination with the ground? It's a flying machine, it is supposed to be away from the ground. Other types of vehicles deal with the ground much much better, like cars, bikes, army tanks etc. Flying machines are supposed to do what cars and tanks cannot do.

So this constant quest to go lower, it's tempting fate, it's staring danger in the face and blowing a raspberry. OK, I like the occasional low high-speed flyby as much as the next humanoid, but generally I like to fly, like as in up in the air.

On a related note, yesterday I was flying up really high in order to try to help get some air-to-air video with someone flying a plank fitted with an FPV rig and it occured to me how it feels strange flying a heli up that high for a long time. But enough about me

Anyway, the bottom line is try to keep it somewhere in that bit between Earth and outer space, this taunting the grass is only going to end in tears

                                Back in the air

Added GV-1 Gov + Spektrum Backplate sensor + Aluma FX lead (enables compatibility for spektrum with GV-1). With this method i got 95% signal strength. Below is the bracket i made iut of a plastic lid

                                Added Quick uk orange skids

                                620 Aerotech woodies used

                                Gear ratio changed from 6.0 84 main + 14 pinion. To 6.42 90 main + 14 pinion.

                                Gov set to 1750, 1800, 1850.

RX drain = 300mah per 12 min flight
Ignition drain = 285mah per 12 min flight
                                Flights

                                04-05-10

                                Had 4 flights

                                Flight report:

                                weather = 14deg cent + 20 mph winds gusty.

Flights were loops + flips + circuits + piros.

Engine feels alot happier with the 6.42 gear ratio.

Govenor helped with overspeeding. The model handles wind very well. I'm still dialing in the engine but i have no vibes.

The auto performance is acceptable. There isn't alot left over at the end. This will improve with better blades. The tail belt increases the drag on the system.

Model behaved very well today and didnt really get affected by the wind. Controls felt very balanced in slow and low.

I will be trying another set of Rotortechs as soon as they arrive
