GPS for the Skookum boys and girls.
It does seem like a pretty awesome system but Sooooooooo expensive.
£380 just for the GPS... Add the £350 it costs for an SK720 Black and you have one heck of an expensive system.
Black pre-order here btw http://www.fast-lad.co.uk/store/skoo...r-p-23022.htmlRidding the world of Helis, one crash at a time....

Makes the HC3SX looks very cheap if you are looking for a bail out option imo.
But the GPS still looks very interesting........don't know if I need it on a heli though!

Yes it is very expensive. Seems better than the HC3SX though as you don't have to flick a switch to trigger the bailout, you can have it automatically activate if the heli drops to a certain height.Originally posted by panosg View PostIl agree.

Also a return to home feature which is impressive and would be useful for me as I fly so far away on the speed runs (and high) I could easily have lost it if it wernt for the fact I just know what way its facing lol.
But damn, I aint spending that much on it but then saying that as I just thought as I typed it. Its a small price to pay considering if Spunky goes wonderingLast edited by Jamin_00; 12-02-2013, 03:09 PM.

GPS for the Skookum boys and girls.
It has various failsafe checks it runs through before start up and has to see a certain HDOP before setting home.
chances of a failure in flight that somehow reprogram that are utterly remote... Just as likely to have your heli fly out of control with a servo glitch or malfunction IMO.
Failure of the gps unit or loss of sufficient satellites/HDOP in flight will cause a reversion to non-GPS modes.
I'd say the biggest risk is someone who doesn't know what they are doing and sets home on the bench lol.... Given the process it shouldn't really happen but people will always find new and creative ways to mess up. That said it won't land, only hover 10m up so there should be very little potential for harm even in that scenario.Last edited by Zeeflyboy; 12-02-2013, 03:11 PM.Ridding the world of Helis, one crash at a time....

I wonder... a 10hz GPS module is <£20 must have cost loads for the plastic box.... maybe it has some scrambling system for the nema codes that makes the plastic expensive....

GPS for the Skookum boys and girls.
They are at least using the ublox which is quite a bit more expensive than some of the options lol.
Still a huge markup even considering the rest of the components. I imagine a lot of it is what they feel fair for the R&D and software development.
IMO could have been a good hundie less and i'd have been more interested. If DJI and now align with their APS Lite can put out a GPS enabled system for $400 total, then I'm sure Skookum could have done a bit better than $1400 even if it is more capable/advanced.
The more we see of these systems the lower the price will be. Won't be long before someone comes along and pulls a "beast X" moment and makes a very capable unit that the masses can afford.Last edited by Zeeflyboy; 12-02-2013, 06:12 PM.Ridding the world of Helis, one crash at a time....
