  • Story from today, all hail the mighty skookum!

Since there's not much going on in this skookum forum I thought I'd add my little story from today.

I nearly got to test out what everyone was saying about the protos being fragile this afternoon (although given my height and speed I think even a tank would have had trouble).

I was doing a low high speed pass and pulled up vertically a good 100ft for a big stall turn with a half flip at the top, a half roll, and a piro on the way down but totally dumb thumbed it and being both far away and high up, I lost which way was up! Every input was wrong, every move of the stick making things worse, mayday mayday mayday....

The visions started... My nice new shiny protos tumbling towards the earth from over 100 feet up... The sound as it crunched in to terra firma.... The sight of blades flying through the air and a smoking crater as the lipo caught fire.... The tears of a grown-arse man crying as he collected the bits of his expensive toy....

But then I realised the protos was just sitting there, ever so slowly descending, unaware of the fact that it should be broken into a thousand tiny pieces. I glanced down and saw my finger pressed hard on my little red panic button. The skookum bail-out system had saved me and I had pressed the bail-out button without even thinking about it. I span the tail to get my bearings, added a little collective to stop the descent and then brought it back to land.

    I am officially a believer....

    Good aint it!

Once the gps is up and running, the same button will bring it back and hover it 10 metres in front of you!

      It really is...

I had thought the self function was a cool gimmick but that I wouldn't really ever use it. Just as well I bothered to set it up as a bail out option, because I couldn't have been more wrong!

I am eagerly awaiting the GPS module, I'm hoping there's such an option as you describe or just a bailout to completely stationary option too. Combine it with an accurate sonic altimeter and it could even take care of collective for you in theory! That's the future... you hit bailout, heli flips upright, flies back to you and takes up a hover at 5m off the ground lol.
