  • Rules when landing Fbl ??

Well, third flight with the Trex 700 fbl, had a bit of a tail wag so came into land, as model was sitting on the floor, it started to lean over. I couldn't seem to stop it and bang....boom, TT, blades, links on head, really ****ed off.

Question to people with more experience flying fbl, I was side onto the wind when I landed and it did pick up a bit. Should I always be landing into wind??, or have I just been unlucky ??. Was really enjoying how it was flying, no looking very sorry for itself. Just put my new LE canopy on as well.

    Spoilt a great day.
    Cheers,
    Simon

Yeah this seems to be an issue with FBL's

I did see a video somewhere where the guy was using different Gain Rates, as during Autos the model would want to tip over so he set dual gains so that he could turn the gain down a bit during landings and that helps quite a bit,.

I think it was the Curtis Youngblood Auto Videos.

    Edit:

Yes it was Curtis Youngblood in the 30 minuets auto video
"Anger and Frustration bring the best out of my flying ability.. because generally I don't give a shit either if the machine hit's the deck or stay's in the air - both will accomplish satisfaction, but most of all it exerts the feeling of flying conservatively. - Callum"

It flies amazingly, really pleased with it. But now looking at a minimum 150 quid bill and I don't feel like I've done anything wrong or made any mistakes.

Guess my 700 will be in semi retirement for a few weeks till I decide what to do. Might sell the fbl head and go back to my flybar. The head should pay for the damage.

Nothing worse than putting on a brand new canopy, then breaking it.
          Cheers,

One word of advise, with ANY model, always kill the power when on the deck, no matter for how long. Ground resonance can do funny things, especially with FBL heli's, as it upsets the gyro's. It also reduces the chance of a tip over from a gust of wind, or inadvertently knocking either stick.

In this case it sounds like vibes from being on the deck upset the gyro's hence it had a cyclic "drift" and tipped it over Get it re-built, and bear this in mind from now on; it was an expensive lesson, but not something that you'll do again in a hurry

I had killed the power, as the head speed was decaying it tipped. Really amazed at the damage.

Decided to sell the 3G unit and put the original head back on. Apart from the TT, I've got all the other parts. Might even sell it once I have the time to repair it. Currently sitting on a shelf where I can't see it. Maybe once I've clamed down I will decide.

Sorry to hear of your crash.
This is a problem i see whit the 3G system, You can't change the head gains from the TX
when the heli is in the air the turning point is the center of the head and the heli's hanging from that, the gyros can counter act unwanted movement, thats great but as soon as the skids are on the ground the point of rotation is now the skids, so the gyros are affectively reversed, thats why you should power up and get off the ground without moving the controls and on landing power down quickly.
On the V-bar we have bank switching I have the gain very low on auto and start mode. But i've heard with the v-bar you can sit on the ground without problems, Just don't want to try it.

I've set my mates 3G so when he lands in normal at bottom stick -2 then turns to auto to kill the motor he then has -11 it's don't look so good but it sure stops the blades fast after touchdown.

Get her rebuilt and just get used to killing the blade speed after landing.
                Paul.

Sorry, but after a shakey start and todays proceedings, I've taken it off and will put my old head back on.

Got someone interested in the head if anyone is after just the electronics.

My Trex 500 ESP and 600 ESP have 3G heads on, and I've never seen them even come close to tipping over. Maybe its just the momentum stored in the 700 blades.

Saying that, both the 500 and 600 were doing some strange things in the gusty wind today. Seem to be locked in 95% of the time, then get some strange quirks, then all fine again.

Thanks for the responses. Took all the broken bits off my Trex 700, still can't work out why I came off so badly ??. Looks like I will need a canopy (could put the old one back on I guess), TT, blades (got some which I was selling, but now keeping !!), main shaft bearings feel rough so might replace them. Everything else is straight, not surprising as it was winding down when it toppled over.
                          Cheers,
                          Simon

Dont forget that electrics are inherently smoother than a nitro, so that's almost certainly a contributing factor in the differences you've seen from the smaller electrics to this 700 nitro.

True. I nthe wind today, I felt like the electronics were fighting me a bit. Especially if you came out of a move into a head wind. Seemed like the electronics were getting a bit confused.
