    Howdie,

Like lots of things in this game, we build a heli and put various servo's, electronics, blades etc on them, but in all honesty when do you really start to notice the performance of these parts?

For example, i fly 2 Trex 600 Super Pros, both have JR 8915 servos in them, but if i am honest, it will be a while before i really use them to their full potential. I bought them knowing that i would very unlikely need to upgrade them for along time.

So, where does the difference between 20% and 30% nitro really become noticable with flying? Yeah i notice the difference when punching out vertical, but when flying around and trying out new moves i have never really seen a noticable difference.

I guess what i am asking is, at what standard to you really need the higher nitro content?

I'd say 20% is ok for level 5 but level 6 definitely needs 30%.

I seem to remember from school that playing the recorder only went up to grade 8.

i run 30% because it is only a couple of quid more than 20%.. heli will always be set-up and run on 30% so no messing in future,,

Fair comment, and pretty much the same reason i run 30%.

In all fairness, it depends on the type of flying you do and how hard you are pushing the machine. If you are trying to eek out every last peak of power from the engine in a hard 3D competitive environment, then I'm sure 30% is the stuff for you. Equally, top level FAI flying requires plenty of oomph and throttle control as well.

If you're an average club flyer (if there is such a person?), then maybe you don't actually need so much nitro, but we do have a choice, and for many people, more is better.

Then there's the trade-off between power and engine longevity. More nitro definitely leads to shorter bearing life, and many people take this as being par for the course, and simply change the bearings as and when is necessary. Personally, changing engine bearings is not something I want to do every couple of months, so on the whole I go for 15% nitro which gives me good throttling, more than enough performance for my needs (level 4 I rekon :-) )and excellent engine life. I do also keep a stock of 30% for use in YS engines, just because the 30% has a higher oil content which these engines prefer, and the 30% of brand A is about the same price as 15% of brand B, so my reasons for using some 30% are not based on performance, but on price and ingredient portions.
