Thats gutting mate, thing with methanol engines is atmospheric conditions can just tip them over the edge on tuning. It's always best to keep a regular check on the back plate temp.
I'm fortunate in that Ive not mullered an engine yet due to an over lean run but I do check the backplate once every flying session.
You will get into a possition where you regularly go through bearings but dont quite blow holes in your pistons this seems about the norm for hyper owners

Yeah, done a bit of research regarding "hyper" hyper 50 engines- seems to be the weak point, yet the SX which is down on power doe'snt seem to have that problem,,,just placed my order and hopefully have it by sat,

The bearing issue has to do with three factors IMHO:

1 Your headspeed (the higher the shorter the life)
2 How hard you hammer your engine. (constantly bogging it)
3 Not allowing for the fact that an OS50 hypers will normally run leaner at the end of the tank. You should always be 1-2 clicks richer on the high end than ideal at the beginning of the tank.

Wildcat CY30% and Magnum 30% are both really good fuels and either work great for 3D flying. Totally uneccessary IMHO for mild 3D and sports where the best option is Magnum 20%. I had a terrible time getting Wildcat 20% to tune well and I saw similar problems with other people at our club.

Yep agree with everything richie said there.
If you over work your hyper it wont be long for this life.

well, i have messed about with many fuels over the few years been into helis and imo the hyper runs at its best on magnum 20. the engine does not like 30% imo and there is no more power in using it. i really think the engine needs shimmed for 30% (like the 50's big brothers). wildcat is a very clean running fuel but there is a noticable difference with wildcat 20/30 and magnum 20 in the hyper. without doubt the magnum makes more power but the downside is the amount of smoke from it ofcourse. in my own helis i use 30% in the 90's and 20% in my vibe 50. also i have NEVER (touch wood) ruined a bearing in a 50 OS in the 4 years i have been flying. one of my engines has about 100 gallons on it and it's on the original bearings. my current hyper is about 15 gallons and the bearings up to date are still sweet.

let me say this, guy in club went through 3 sets of hyper bearings in 7 months, he does fly a lot but even still. this was all using 30% magnum. i told him my thoughts on using 20% instead of 30 and he has now not changed a bearing in about 6 months.......interesting. also he has noted no more power from 30 either.

              just my tuppence.

              cheers

I've gone back to Model Technics 25% propower it was the availability of this fuel which was a big bonus. The fact the fuel you choose doesnt keep running out at the model shop helps matters & Pete (Raptorite) uses MT propower entirely in his training fleet & gets very few problems with bearing wear.
I can handle the smell of the sycle additives in this fuel, some people cant. My engines run very good on it even if a little down on power compared to the magnum but I dont notice it too much.
Oh & did I mention I get a whole UK Gallon for £20 not a short US measured Gallon lol.
                sorry I'll get me coat

Funnily enough, I have just ordered some ProPower myself.

Will we be kicked off the forum now?
