  • some nitro problem diagnosis

    Hi all,

whilst flying my YS56 it seemed to be flying pretty well with good smoke however, when coming to a hover, the engine note changed pitch and suddenly was unable to sustain my hover.

Reading around this suggests a lean setting - please correct if wrong. I was pretty much factory settings on the needles with maybe 2 clicks lean on the hover needle

I've taken then engine out taken a peak inside. The piston head is a little blackened, but the sleeve is okay with no vertical scores.

Any suggestions other than going back to factory and starting again?

    cheers

hi mate not familier with ys but was it spluttering and smoky or smoothe sounding with little pwer

1st is too rich second is too lean if in doubt always richen up then retune.

nitros need tuning every time u fly some times retune 30 times in 1 day (unless set soo rich its powerless ) these things are sensitive check backplate temp with finger (although i can hold finger all day long regardless of temp so doesnt werk 4 me)

punch heli into sky to tune high needle find a good power lvl then go coupl clicks out middle needle if u have 1 punch into sky then unload head hopefully lots of smoke

this is just basic stuff dont wanna be lean for too long also theres a vid on heli freak with finless bob that may help a lot

    cheers terry

What fuel are you using ?
When did you last change the clunk line?
My YS56 is singing at the moment even though it quite rich.

Mines on rapicon 15% with the HR56 pipe and a omi fuel magnet.
Mid is about 1/3 in from factory
High is 1/4 in from factory
Low is out 3/4 i think
Do check your clunk line and the seals on the needles.

I guess my question would be, why have you leaned the mid / hover needle? I would only start to lean out the top end once the engine has had plenty of fuel through it, then once you are happy with that then adjust the mid. Perhaps you should go back to the factory settings once you have checked the clunk, fuel lines etc. Also double check that nothing has vibrated loose around the carb, I had this on a new OS once where the carb had come loose and was letting in air, hence going lean. Given how powerful the YS is you probably can get away with running it on the rich side anyway, this is how I run my OSs and I never touch the needles.

I think i've found the issue - my setup had a quick fuel valve between fuel tank and engine. Under pressure (tested using a bucket of water) this valve would quite easily leak, and considering the pressure the YS generates, i'm surprised the engine received any fuel.

So in the bin it goes - still, got to put my new Outrage muffler on - shinny
