Thanks guys. As said earlier, if this is the case then I'll admit the fault as mine. I have to admit, from your responses and the more I think about it, the rust is my fault for leaving it.

I think I'll just take up rachels kind offer and have the bearings changed. I can't see any damage (piston, liner, ring, carb all look good, it's just the rusty bearings. I put in some 3in1 oil and the bearings are still really gritty.

was the crank nut easy to remove/loose when you stripped the engine?
had the fan lifted off the thrust washer/base of the crank?
as after reading your later posts it sounds like the fan moved up the crank jamming the engine up
then after leaving the engine the bearings rusted up and hence once the engine was removed from the heli it was still stuck/seized

        Hey folks an update

Harry sent me his OS nice of him that , lol

so what did I find ?????????????????????????????

Rust quite a bit of it actually , but the real problem was the little end (piston gudgeon pin) was so rusty you couldn't move the connecting rod to the rear of the piston to remove the big end from the crankshaft.

Half a can of WD40 (other brands or rust remover are availible ) loL, and much gentle rocking (TWO HOURS !) of the piston and hey presto the piston was removed.

I replace both crankshaft bearings wit SKF items cleaned polished and genltly caressed everything (ohh err) with some very fine sandpaper and its now back to being the new engine it once was

Now before everyone pops up slating various brands of fuels, methanol is hydroscopic , it atracts water, I don't care what brand you use but imo , yes thats just my oppinion leave an engine full of fuel for a few weeks in the right conditions and this happens.
        I have had it myself.

Much has been written on after care of an engine I have no ritual , bar sacrificing a newborn dodo , but I do thry to run and fly my engines at least every two weeks.

If you are not going to fly your engine for a while run it dry , then remove the packplate and add a small amount of automatic transmision fluid and spin the engine over several times and try to leave it at TDC , piston at the top of its storke all the way up in the cylinder.

You can use 3 in 1 oil but never WD40 (or another brand of penitrating oil ) lol

The best cure against this is GO FLY the darn thing its what its for

I debated whether to post this but it may help some one else.

Harry your engine is coming home fixed enjoy.

        all the best folks XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

I flew two tanks on Monday you cheeky git

Thanks very much Rachel it really is appreciated. Had I known it would have been that much work I would have sent more cash!

So from this, was it a fault of the engine, or a fault of mine? I am happy to admit if I'm wrong, I'm just confused how it got to such a bad state from only 1/3 of a tank of fuel.

Can we have a gold star for Rachel for doing this?

Sadly I had this happen to me once , it follows no pattern I can work out !
I left an os55 for 3 months in my spare bedroom , just finished flying, stopped the engine on the trim and and left it , no trouble no corrosion.

I then left the same engine / model hanging up on its skids in my indoor heli cupboard for only 3 weeks, blam seized solid , just like yours !!!

Now you will need to run the engine slightly rich, fly it , hover a bit, fly circuits a bit m loo, roll have fun ! Leave the mad 3 d for a while say 5. Tanks or so then gradually lean the engine out. Loading a new engine is bad, gentle flying is the key but don't become too paranoid about it .

I did manage to catch the post so your heli engine will be home tomorrow , before one pm, I oiled it up so no panic to fly it ,I also put a glow plug in an os no8 not sure how good it is though.

I used SKF ,a good quality bearing so they should be ok for four gallons or so.

As for money thank you but the postage was £7 insured next day, I will take nothing for my work so next time I am at midland helicopters it's £13 in the cystic fibrosis box :-)

As for the star thank you but my reward will be to see you fly :-)

                All the best x Rachel
