  • YS 56 Carb Isolator block

It was nicely cool during initial running in then after a few tanks the 600's fan hub started slipping.. Pulled the engine and re-seated the hub. To dog it down I pulled the carb and used a plastic handle in there to lock the crank (no crank locking tool)

Everythign was fine for a few tanks after than but then it started getting hotter than I like even with the needles right out at max settings. Then the hub started slipping again so I've had it all out.

The carb gasket was a little bit sooty with signs of leakage around one of the retaining bolts on the isolator. I cleaned it all up with spirit to see if I could re-use the gasket for tomorrow and it looked fine. But while tightening the carb back down I see the isolator starting to crack around that bolt.

I'm not going to speculate whether it was faulty or I over tightened.. academic .. and arguable without a torque wrench and just 'feel'.

I'm reporting this more as another thing to watch out for if you start getting the same signs.

The isolator isn't listed as a spare on the main sources .. so it'll have to be a call to FL where I got the engine to see if they can source one and a new gasket set.

I'm oversensistive to engines after recent events. IR gun temps were 135F max...but I don't trust that fully..it felt hotter than that to a finger.. as in 2 seconds and very uncomfortable

Called FL this am.. they haven't come across that insulator block splitting and can't find the part listed so they're making some calls for me..

Good news is that it can't be a common problem for all you other owners.. bad news is that I've got that problem and an inevitable delay for the spare.

Yet another reason why one just can't have enough helis. I'll have to suffer and fly some of the other five..well it will be five when I've fixed up two that I dinged over the last week getting the inverted flying lower and tighter...not a trick I'd practice with the big money toys.

I wouldn't be surprised if it isn't the same block (part number) that's on the 91 engines.

Have a look at the pdf manuals with the parts list for the 91ST, 91SR and 56SR engines on YS' website to see if they're the same -> ys_top

FL wondered that too but the YS part numbers aren't quite the same as my manual and the 56SR pdf isn't active on YS site...

I'm sure FL have access to tech help on that.

        Thank's for the thought, though
