  • Hylomar

I would much prefer to have metal to metal contact between muffler and engine, but I recently bought a Funtech exhaust and it suggests using silicon.
Has anybody used Hylomar as a sealant on their muffler?

Hi.I went to leeds model shop at the weekend for some exhaust gaskets and they told me not to bother and just use silicon sealant. So i guess thats a yes you can use it.

Please don't use the silicon I have very bad experience of it. If you get any on the inside of the port it can get blown back into the engine and it can happen at any time. I went through 4 plugs with the engine cutting at any time. In the end I went metal to metal without any problems

I'm totally against silicon, but wondered if Hylomar would be better. Its supposed to be non-setting, and therefore I hope it couldn't get sucked back into engine.

Use a thin smear of 5 minute epoxy, works as well as anything else and is easy enough to remove when needed.

Why dont ya just buy a proper gasket and be done with it? I just use the metal gaskets that already come with alot of pipes TBH.

Because the instructions speak of silicon, and the Funtech floating exhaust also needs a spacer to clear the fuel tank. So lots of places to leak.

I've always used Hylomar. You do need to face off both the engine exhaust port and the muffler, then just a thin smear of Hylomar and bolt it up.
I've never had a leak or any plug trouble.
I used to use epoxy on my plank engines and that worked also, but it more work if you want to clean it off.

Mike, does it set at all?

It does set, but still remains semi soft a bit like silicone sealant. Un-like epoxy which sets hard. It reasonably easy to clean off with alcohol. Try not to apply too much as when you clamp the muffler up some will squidge out into the exhaust port and this will upset the gas flow. As I said just a thin smear is sufficient.

I've always imagined JB Weld would be a bit too strong but never tried it myself. Do you get any problems with it creeping as it takes a long time to set and seems to run all over the place unless you keep it fenced in
