  • camera gimbal controllers...

    All,

okay i'm currently building my own Vulcan Camera ship

Now gimbals are interesting and are crazy options for control boards but what I am lacking to understand is why no one is using Helicopter Gyros for the stabilisation ?

I mean one gyro on tilt a csm 720 gyro with a Dam good servo should hold and then another on the other axis again it should hold...

main challenges though I suspect is finding servos the right size for the job and the fine tweaks but gyros like the CSM ones you can tinker inside there settings.

They can hold a 90 size helicopter tail in a cross wind steady as... so why not hold a camera gimbal steady ? or am I missing something which is very likely...

Mount the gyro on the camera platform. Make a timer circuit that outputs a 1mS to 2mS adjustable pulse every 50mS for gain input and similarly for rudder signal input and then mount the servo in such a way that it can move the camera platform.

It is worth a go and looks to be a pretty good little project.

      camera gimbal controllers...

I've been thinking about this since we discussed it the other day, Mark. I reckon it can certainly be done! There's no reason why not (that I can think of!).

The AV200 comes with the servos installed so that's half the task done right there. Same for the AV130 too

          Steve,
yes thats very smart and neat but will it do Heading Hold like a helicopter tail does...

So put the gyros into heading hold and fly even if the multi drifts slightly the camera should stay pointing where you tell it to...

in fact if you have the camera focused on something and you climb higher the camera should keep pointing straight at the object you focused on
without the camera man having to try and keep it in his sights. if that makes sense ?

I'm wondering if those servos are good enough though... might be better/faster ones out there...

There's a lot it will do and the main advantage is the brushless stabalization that one i a 2 axis but a 3 axis is emminently posable

Believe me! There is nothing I would like more than to have a DD gimbal. However, from the info I have been given so far, there won't be one available for a decent sized camera for some time!

Guys it's nearer than you might think. Already pretty much nailed the go pro size brushless gimbal and we are working on a DSLR version that should carry up to 1.5kg (eg canon 5D) and maybe 2kg - don't worry we are not talking fortunes like the zenmuse stuff.

                      Watch this space.

                      Cheers,

If you want to go with servos you'd be better using something with accelerometers as well as a gyro.

The SSG or super simple gimbal might be a good idea:
Super Simple Gimbal - SSG - Poor man's gimbal - Info on 1st page - RC Groups

All you really need is a HK KK2.0 flight controller with its FW flashed to do differential control and away you go.
Results are impressive for such a simple device.

If you want near Zenmuse quality then I believe the Alex Mos solution is the only real alternative (at the minute, though some interesting techniques are upcoming)
Control Boards are about £100. You need to rewind motors and construct a gimbal or buy commercial ones.
If you rewind your own and make a gimbal you could have the lot in the air for £150-£200.
Commercial versions are likely to run £200-£400 but will be easier to sort (ask my poor fingers what rewinding a motor is like!)

                          Cheers

I've spent enough money on gimbals to make normal people sick. Myself included.
