  • Canon 650d for my Aerial Platform

I love new toys, this has just arrived

Now all I have to do is learn how to use it and then grow another big set of gonads and mount it to my Vulcan Hex for stills (I will be using my CX730 for video which cost even more than this Canon puppy....)

Yeah I'm looking forward to playing with it. The lenses that I have are the kit 18-55, a 55-250 (arrives tomorrow) and what seems to be a well respected 50mm 1.8 prime. I plan to get better lenses when I can afford them - probably kick off with the 17-55 efs f2.8, man I thought you could spend a lot on heli's - this photography lark is on another scale.....

      Cheers,
      Simon

lol, I know, tell me about it, I have the kit lens on my 450d - 18-55 but then got a nice Christmas pressie in the form of a EF-S 55 - 250 IS lens which I have had some lovely shots off as you get a real depth of field with it

        Happy shooting

Canon 650d for my Aerial Platform

I just picked up a new 550D with kit lens and a Sigma 10-20 wide lens for my aerial rig. Haven't had much chance to play with it yet but memory card is coming tomorrow hopefully.

Are you putting it on the AV200?

Yep - that's the plan. With the 50mm prime lens it weighs in at approx 650g which is about 70g more than the sony cx730 and the Vulcan hex will cope with that all day long - well 8 minutes (with a safety margin of + 2 mins) lol. A friend of mine is already using a 550d on an AV200 and it's working very well.

If I add a heavier lens then I'll just add another 5000ma 4s lipo as the air frame is more than capable of the lift and the extra lipo capacity will add about another 2 to 3 mins flight time despite the combined added weight.

As I mentioned, it will be used for stills and the cx730 will be used for video - why, because the 650d is superb for stills and not so hot for vids and visa versa for the cx730.

All I need now is some reasonable weather - oh hang on I think I saw another pink elephant fly by the window.... better take a picture.

                  Cheers,
                  Simon

Do you have to have special mounting for the camera to eliminate/reduce vibration to get really sharp pictures? How much can you do remotely, changing lenses must be a pain.

Here are a couple of pics with the 650d mounted on the AV200 gimbal.

I have remote control via a separate channel for shutter activation for stills and video.

Test flights will show up any issues.
