  • GoPro or DSLR

    Ok So I want to be able to take photos and possible run some videos in the future. i already have a dslr camera, but will I be better off buying a gopro and taking photos with this (I assume you can)
    or getting a camera gimbal for my current camera. I don't forsee a problem carrying the camera as I am looking to get an F550

    Video = gopro
    Stills = DSLR

    Unless your looking for serious quality but i guess you wouldnt be looking at a F550 if you were .
    The newest lines of go pro will record in 4k now which is more than enough for whatever youd want to do with a F550 imo. If you want more then its probably better that you start looking for a more serious bird to carry it all

      One thing to take into account is the horrific fish-eye effect you get with a gopro...

        Yeah I looked at the more "serious bird" when researching the heli and I don't think my funds will stretch to that.
        I think as an entry level to this I will go with the GoPro for now, it will be interesting to see what the GP4 will do, it looks like it might have a remote stills function, but I may have missread.
        Really looking forward to getting up there and taking some cracking shots

            I recently bought a gopro 3+ and a 3DR Y6 (Hexa equivalent to an F550 i believe) and have to say I'm very pleased with the results, even with a direct mount (still saving for the gimbal).

            For video, I run the gopro in medium or mainly narrow field of view which removes the majority of fisheye and also prop view as mine is simply stuck to the top at the moment.

            Although the gopro does have a wifi interface which will allow you to take stills remotely there have been numerous reports of this potentially leading to brownouts if you're running 2.4 for you TX/RX so I have not used it for stills so far and am not sure how I would do that, the wifi range is also pretty poor so it's not really worth trying for this. You could always put it into a continuous shoot / timelaps mode and simply shoot the whole flight I guess. If you want to try this you need to put the camera into 7MP and shoot using medium otherwise the old fisheye will be back, I can't remember if you have a narrow option.

            Given the one thing people bash on about is all up weight, I would imagine there's a big trade off in flight time between going with an SLR and a Gopro which may also be worth considering, depending what you're trying to shoot.

            Hope this helps, here's a shot of the Y6 incase you're interested.

              If you want to take stills put the gopro in time lapse mode. Fly point it at the subject for long enough for the camera to take a couple of pictures (maybe move slightly to get slightly different framing) and move on to the next shot.
