  • New to FPV

Hi everyone, i have decided i want to give fpv racers a go. With the weather like this i have not flown a heli in 3 months and want something else to try and figured this would be great. Currently i have set a £200 budget for a quad, goggles and lipos. Not sure if that's enough. I will most likely be looking at buying a second hand quad and new goggles. Any recommendations would be great. Currently i have been looking at these goggles but i am not sure about the video quality from videos i have seen, or is that more down to the camera?

They've had problems with the focus down to the lack of movement between the lens and screen apparently but apart from that they reckon a good buy compared to the original V1. I'm tempted I have to admit

            One reply back

For the money they are great. I would say they are great to see how you get on with fpv. They are a bit big and bulky and some people need to fix the monitor a little further away from their eyes to get a good focus.
For the money, I would go as far as for twice the price they would be good!

If you don't get on with them you still will have a 5" monitor. OK so not a low cost 5" monitor but not a total loss of your outlay. Thinking about it if you don't get on with them you could probably get a reasonable price for them on ebay as brand new ones from China are £60!!!

              Just had this back

I have some and I think they are fine. I have had a few goes on fat shark gogs...and well...Quanums are different as its just one screen but I find it just fine.

The colour and clarity are pretty good too. The magnifying lens in them does give you that immersive thing, as well, they do feel a bit weird but then FPV is pretty strange anyway. You do feel like you have a big foamy thing on your face but that's OK too really.

I also find myself looking at different parts of the screen in front of my eyes as its THAT BIG...Like ooh whats that thing in the corner down there....

Also for a glasses wearer who can't see crap without them if I ever had to RIP of the goggs cos of cam failures I might have a chance of seeing my quad without having to find my looking glasses ;-)

One day if I win the premium bonds I might get some fat sharks just to see....The quanums will be great for passenger rides.

For the price they are really good I think. You also get a switch so you can have a cam on your head to see whats going on around you if you like.

Had some of those Quanums in the link above, bit bulky but they work and you still need a video Rx to go with them. Sold mine and bought some Fatshark Dominator V3's and some Dom V2 Hd's, much more comfortable to wear and no problems with focal length. Video quality will only be as good as the camera you are using.

Iv used the quantum v1 and v2, and they are both very good but v2's are much more comfortable than v1.

I have some Fatshark Predator v2's also, and image quality is same as quantum goggles just more immersive.

For the quad side of things look at the EMAX Nighthawk 280, can get them off ebay for £130, they come ready to fly with all electronics other than an RX. I fly mine with 2200mah 3s lipos and I get around 8 mins flight time and still plenty of poke. the supplied video TX is good quality and 32 channel also has a 20mw/200mw switchable power output. supplied camera is good quality also.

i just bought some basic stuff from bangood and i am still waiting on the screen but i tried it out on the telly tonight and was really impressed considering i paid 12 for the tx and 600tvl camera and 14 for the 32 ch receiver. after a lot of research to find a cheap monitor i ended up ordering this item below and i thought if it worked i might try and mount it to my tx for my scale car, this is what the project is for. i may also get a lump of polystyrene somewhere and make goggles as its already got a nice shape to it. If i find the whole experience of car fpv fun i may go further with it.

I've tried Attidude V2, Dominator HD V2, Skyzone and Quanum V1 and V2 and are all good. You really can't beat the Quanums on price, but they are a bit cumbersome.

The only goggles I've tried that are rubbish are the Teleporters. It's like looking at a postage stamp.

For FPV cameras, I STONGLY recommend the HS1177. If you're on a budget, the Banggood 148 degree CCD camera is decent, but avoid Cmos cameras as their light handling sucks.

Current fleet: Goblin Thunder Sport (700), Trex 700L, Logo 600, Specter 700, Henseleit TDR, V-Baaa control.
Next heli: I have pretty much everything I want. Maybe I'll upgrade some electronics or something.
