  • F3C setups, recommended reading/basic ideas for equipment/online resources.

Thanks to everyone at the AHA event yesterday, particularly Mark Christy for patiently putting up with my noobish and (hopefully) not so noobish beginner F3C questions. It was a great eye opener and above all made me realise how little I actually know about the hobby I enjoy and how little I've actually progressed in my flying abilities. That has kept me up most of the night searching for all sorts of stuff over the interwebs and, frankly, not getting very far.

So, with that in mind could any of you good people point me in the direction of some (or any) good information resources regarding model helicopter dynamics, Flybarless/SAS principles, equipment reviews, blade dynamics. Anything really that'll give me a better grounding in how my helicopters actually fly and how they effect what I'm trying to do while attempting to control them. The one thing that made the most impression on me in talking with Mark is how badly I'm able to understand and recognise if the problems I have are down to my lack of ability, the way my models work/are set up or the equipment I'm using and I'd like to at least try and address that. Mark gave me some good insights but there's only so much you can glean from one person in one afternoon without trying everyones good will and patience.

I will say that the one thing that has disappointed me so far is how little information for people such as myself the AHA either has readily available or can link to (I rest my case at http://www.ukf3cteam.co.uk/F3C/Welcome.html and Links) It's all good and well linking to the schedules and regs for the competitions which are, of course, important but without making available at least basic background materials to draw people such as myself into even looking at F3C there needs to be more helpful initial steps and further reading information from the association. Yesterday was a great step in addressing that lack of up-front information from my view but the F3C side of things appears to be very much a closed shop with no practical way of getting that first step on the information ladder. I willingly accept that there may well be additional AHA resources that would be available to me and others that are locked away behind the AHA membership wall but that does no good in getting people such as myself interested enough in the AHA and F3C/F3N to take that step behind the pay wall. Yes, it is only £10 a year but that's still money not necessarily well spent if one has no idea where that leads nor is able to make the journey to charmouth to attempt to get in with the in crowd.

All that said, I'm very glad I did come down to the event yesterday and greatly appreciate the time everyone gave to making it successful, at least for me. Also a very heartfelt thanks in advance for any and all 'get you started/what you need to know' reading recommendations that this thread will hopefully acquire.

There used to be some good resources on a site called 'AllmyRC' but it is gone unfortunately. I think at the moment the best forum for F3C info is Runryder because there is a dedicated section and top pilots from all over the world contribute on there.

There was a time when I got very deep into the tech side of the setup and physics. When it was all about flybar ratios, paddles and weights and dampers etc. I learned how to tune a flybarred head for F3C. Now that it has gone FBL I don't really know what the accepted best practices are.

These articles by Colin Mills are still good:
