  • YGE - any good?

    All,

I'm thinking about a YGE to replace the stock ESC in my 550X. Just trying to gauge opinion on these ESCs ..

Once thing I've noticed is that UK suppliers seems to be a bit thin on the ground. Fast lad and Midland have some units, but not the complete range.

Where do most people source them from, and are they Ok? Any gotchas (Just saw Jamie's thread about soft start not being particularly soft!)

They are good, but if spending that money why not go with a Kontronik ?

Otherwise why not think about the YEP esc, running them in my Warp & Goblin & very happy with the setup & soft start

Also by default I have the YGE in my Protos 500 & the YEP's setup exactly the same & so far just as good

Go with one of the YEP clones or the soon to be unveiled apparent Kontronic Jive clones coming out of China that are rumoured to be in testing.

        no pun but YEP, agree

YEP controllers are really excellent, run them exclusively in all my helis and they are very very reasonably priced, even took out out a CC as it sponatenoulsy combusted and replaced it with the YEP

My reason for looking at the YGE was this unit : YGE Brushless Controller

... as it has the power output I need (~120/130A) and includes a decent BEC (6/12A) at what seems a reasonable price (189,00 € = £160).

The YEP120HV is definitely on my list, but I do like the idea of a decent integrated BEC which it doesn't have.

I can't find any Kontronic in the same ball park (price and power) as the YGE, let alone the YEP.

The forthcoming Castle Edge 130LV looks a possibility too, but can't find any details (ie. peak v continuous) about its 5A BEC.

I run the YEP 120HV on my Goblin 700 in 12S can just run a 2S lipo for the HV electrics, works a charm

If your on a LV setup then why not the Hobbyking YEP 100A (2~6S) SBEC Brushless Speed Controller (UK Warehouse)

Has a 5.5/6a switching BEC, surely that should be quite capable on the 550x ?

They are still significantly cheaper than Kontroniks! Cant fault my YGE, governor is very good and never comes down more than 35 degC. The soft start isnt very soft on my Goblin either, but it would hardly be a reason not to buy one.

Yep, this is all for the 550X. The stock ESC is 130A and recommendation seems to be that 100A will suffice for mild sport flying, but you need 120A or better ideally. I'm no great pilot, but I would prefer if possible to get closer to the recommendations.

Again, the stock BEC is 10A continuous - I can of course just keep that and remain using it, but if I had found an ESC with a strong BEC, I would have simply used that instead for cabling simplicity! Also, I'm crap at soldering

So yes, the YEP120HV coupled with my existing BEC is a definite for the shortlist - just wondering if the YGE120LV with integrated BEC might be a nicer option!

                  Tom,
if you are going to run HV, in fact anything above 5S then really you shouldnt be considering using the onboard BEC anyway. Surely on a 550 its 6S therefore would have a seperate 2s lipo? correct me if im wrong please as I dont have a 550 size heli, 600 and above tend to be my mainstay these days.

It seems crazy that they are advising on 130a escs on a 550, the Trex 550 I had ran fine on the stock 70a esc whilst I had it.

                      Rich,

The 550X stock setup is for 6S but it comes with a seperate/external (to the ESC) 10A BEC unit, so no need for a 2S LIPO. Replacing the ESC though means that I would have to resolder the BEC which I admit, I was hoping to avoid by making use of a decent internal BEC.

You're right though, I think most current internal BECs aren't really up to the job for >500 class helis.

Main thing to note too is YGE have EXCELLENT after sales .... i've been in email contact with them for a couple months sorting out a potential ESC issue and they have been nothing but courteous and helpful.

Since, apparantly, most of the YGE guys are ex-kontronic i'll stick with YGE (both my helis run them)

On my Fusion the ESC comes down barely above ambient temp (90HV) and it drives the motor really nicely

The old Trex550 did use a 70A ESC, but the latest 550E uses the Talon90. The B550X is a bit bigger than the Trex550 too. For the most part, the load is much less than 100A, but guys testing it on HF have shown that slighly more aggressive stuff will peak up to 130A.

But you're right, and Blade have said that for mild sport flying, a 100A ESC will suffice.

                            YGE - any good?

Yge becs are voltage selectable right through to 8.4v and solid.

Personally I wouldn't touch a clone of anything in life, just asking for trouble.
