Here's a link to a review of the 550 from some time ago:

Dont spend more flying models than it costs to fly for real
I think the CF Gaui 550 Hurricane is a very under rated helicopter. I have had mine for 6 months now and bought her so that I would have something big enought to take the BMFA 'A' test. I have only flown it twice as a guest at our local club because it is far too big to fly in my backgarden and on both occasions it was very windy. Despite still being a newby the Gaui is so stable and forgiving that I managed a full five minutes of controlled hovering and lazy eights on both occasions. Until I can get into my local club she is a bit of a hanger queen but I can't wait to get her flying regularly and hopefully in less windy conditions.
Have fun

And a tolerant wife, what more could any man ask for?
Got a puzzle.
anybody with a Hurri 550 changed the OWB recently?
I had mine go u/s, so replaced that, and the shaft it fits on. the pinion is longer than the old one, no biggie, should make it stronger.
Likewise the shaft is also longer, made, I think, to fit the extra bearing mod for the motor plate, again no biggie.
My puzzle is, along with the shaft, I got a couple of shims, diameter the same as the large part of the shaft.
Anybody know where these fit?
Logic says, above and below the OWB, but I cannot see a way to fit them without splitting the frames, which I do not want to do.
Finless Bob's build notes, on t'other channel, say there is a certain amount of vertical float on the OWB, and this is acceptable.
If these shims are there to take out this float, can I assume they are not strictly necessary?
Any ideas?
Cheers
Jeff
Fit one below the OWB - you don't need to split the frames - the primary gear is held onto the top of the shaft by 2 grub screws - undo these and push the shaft down from above (through the bearing in the motor mount), the shaft will push out of the bottom. Refit the shaft with one shim below the OWB, when you push the shaft into the primary gear make sure that the grub screws locate in the "dimples" in the shaft.
Any probs just shout.
Mike (2 550's and about 350 flights between them)
Thanks for the quick reply. I knew about sliding the shaft downwards to get the OWB out, my problem was how to refit it with both shims.
From what you tell me, I only need to fit one, which should be easy.
Any idea why they supply two?
Many thanks
BTW. I do not have the extra bearing in the motor plate. Now I have the longer shaft, is it worth fitting this too?
Thanks again
Jeff
Yep - well worth fitting the longer motor mount - stiffens things up a bit. I'm not sure why they supply 2 shims, and in fairness I flew mine with both in for a year - but everybody told me I only need 1 so I changed (the manual says 1 as well).
