I read in the larest heli mag that thunder tiger have/are selling a silicon ati-static spray to combat boom static.

Given that owners (including me) have many reported problems of various severity with futaba 401 gyro, is this a mismatch that a magic spray will cure :?

Hi Mike,

First of all welcome to the site

To answer your question, yes it has been identified and proved that static build up in the boom generated by the tail belt has played havoc with some gyros, particularly whe they are located behind the mainshaft in their normal position. So in that respect the silicone spray will probably sort out allot of the problems.

It may not be a magic cure for all gyro problems but it will certainly help.

Incidentially, with your GY401 problems, does it loose the neutral position in Heading Hold some times? if it does, are you using a PPM rx? I have had that myself with GY502's, if they sense more than 3 consecutive glitches from a PPM rx they reset the HH neutral position for some reason, since changing to PCM rx's which mask any glitches from the gyro I haven't had it since.

Only a work around

The anti-static spray will at best only be a work around, as is 'earthing' the boom to the engine. The only real solution is to move the gyro sensor up front under the canopy.

It can be done, I have my batteries slung under the radio tray shelf (taped on) with a Quick UK crash box on top of the radio tray (double sided tape, plus velcro straps, then my gyro is mounted on top of the crash box. My GV1 is double sided taped to the front face of the crash box. Only problem with this setup, is the expense if I have a bad nose first crash !, hasn't happened yet.

Raptorite- your info feels familiar. I am using a futaba ppm duel conversion rx. My prob's have been the 401 not holding in either mode regardles of the gain settings.
i'm about ready to bin the 401 as I have stripped down and checked and reset everything I can think of. Cost a mint in new shafts,blades, engine battery etc.

Will try a pcm rx next chance I get. "er indoors got me d.i.y ing
