I personally think it is all a matter of personal preference and tastes.

Obviously there are some helis that are more expensive to repair than others, its horses for courses, if you want something to learn new stuff with then get a 30 or 50 size or a lower cost 60/90 size but if you want something as a decent smooth ship then youre into the likes of a fury or a 3dnt.

As for the comment on canopies, if you were at Sandown on the Saturday for sure (I dont know about Sunday) you would have seen the likes of Bob J fly his usual full 3d routine with a turbine powered robbe futura nova without a canopy of any description 8O

By the way, as the name suggests, I have 5 raptors

    1 x 30
    2 x 50's
    1 x 70
    1 x 90

The reason I went for these? the parts are easy to get hold of and some are interchangeable throughout the whole range

    Cheers,

    Pete.

          i have flown a 3dnt and 3dmp (electric)

they are both smooth helis and look fast in the air but lack the punchy collective and fast cyclics required for modern 3d.

Also the skid layout makes autos rather interesting.

Hopefully get to have a fly of a 90 powered 3dmp soon. Thats going to be interesting. I am hoping the 90 plant hasnt push the weight much if any above that of a "normal" 50 if it hasnt I think its going to be rather good fun.

We have a 90 3DNT at our club.

It was the owners 2nd helicopter!

He's had it for quite a few years now, and has only had one mishap when the pcm receiver went into failsafe for some unknown reason. It was suprisingly cheap to repair.

We often joke about it up at the field, that it flies by thought power only - ie you don't actually have to move the sticks, you just think about where you want it to go and it goes there!

I've never had a go myself, but it sounds great, performs fast and nimbly, and runs on the cheapest fuel available - typical German design!

The biggest downside to it is it can be difficyult to see the orientation at times because of the symetrical, rugby ball shapped canopy.

i like the fact that the heli is very stable, and uses no nitro fuel but to be honest i can't help but think it's slow on the cyclic.i've put different blades on it now, used to have sab,now has nhp,and also screwed the paddles on furthar.hope this will help.

                    Hey,
Whats the gig with the 3DNT's...
One of the first helis i saw to fly in person (asside my R-30 that is) was a 3DNT and it was Ballistic! I'v always seen them in a good light and when i get out of uni i'm thinking i might try get one if i can afford one that is (only 4 years away haha).
But yeah, I always thought hensilite was the dogs nadgers...
But it has been many years and i'm curious as to weather the cyclics/punch can be upped to match modern day N9 stype 3D?

I'm sure you must be able to?!

                    -Jvr

                    Ps,
                    I like 3DNT's THIS Much!
                    Autos be much fun

there are a couple of issues with the 3dnt.

first its a direct belt drive. this means if you want the rotorhead to rotate CW (same as everything else) you need a reverse crank for your engine. you cant get this crank for the modern 91s so your stuck running it backwards which makes life a little tricky if your used to running CW.

another problem is the engine stuck out the front means that when you piro the fuel centrifuges out and makes the motor go rich.

i have never had a long enough play with the NT to get into getting the cyclics faster. or really looked into why they are slow. so it could be possible.

I got a 3DMP recently. I like it. Very fast in forward flight and plenty quick on the cyclics too, even at low rotor rpm. It's rather wierd doing Tictocs at only 1750 on the head. Makes it all seem very effortless.

It is bloody hard to see though. I leave it at home if it's not sunny.

You need to adjust the positions of the mixer arms to up the rate of cyclic on a 3DNT or 3DMP. If you ever come across videos of the german 3D guy's flying these helis you'll see that they can be set up to be extremely quick on the cyclic.
See if you can find Robert Sixts video inside the sports hall with the 3DMP..
