  • Scorpion Backup Guard

    Guys,

This is the first time I’m using this devise and the manual ain’t to helpful so I was hoping on some general advise?

Firstly charging; can I just use the stock 130x charger to charge the Scorpion Backup Guard (SBG); I’ve also got the 130x parallel charge cables for my Fusion LX60B charger will that work as well? If not please can you send me some details or links on what type of cable I’ll need with my LX60B?

I’m fitting the SBG to my Goblin 500; can anybody show me a few picture of your wiring it doesnt have to be from a G500. I’m interested to know how I connect\wire both the Talon 90 and SBG to my BeastX AR7200BX. Does the Talon supply power to the beastx and only if there is a failure the SBG supplies power or does the SBG supply power to the beastx and therefore the Talon power cable should be removed from the throttle connector to beastx?

    Hi,
I've not got one but MrMel did a video review of the scorpion backup guard and he recommended making a normal charging cable from a servo extension lead. Basically, remove the cover from the male end and clip out the middle pin. You can then charge it as a normal 2s lipo. My one concern is that it doesn't allow for balancing.

As for connecting, it should be plugged into a spare port on the beastx AS WELL as the Talon ESC lead, including the red cable. The output from the talon should be higher than the 5v output from the scorpion. In usage, the scorpion should only discharge if the talon is outputting less than 5v.So the Talon BEC provides primary power and the SBG acts as an emergency buffer.

It should also be turned on after you connect the main flight pack and power up your RX/FBL system. Reverse for disconnecting, power off scorpion and then main flight pack.

all of the above is a recap from the Mr Mel review and what I've read on the scorpion site.

      Hi,

The Scorpion Backup Guard is essentially what it says on the tin, a backup guard.

The Scorpion Backup Guard (SBG) does not replace the usual means of powering your system, be it in the form of a built in BEC or external BEC or even and external requlator or standalone LiPo or LiFe battery. The Scorpion Backup Guard (SBG) simply plugs into your system into a spare channel/port on your receiver or flight control unit and in case of BEC failure, the Scorpion Backup Guard (SBG) will take over and the 5V output will allow you to land safely.

The Scorpion Backup Guard (SBG) is operated by switching on after you power up you main power system, be this the ESC/BEC or external BEC/regulator. This allows you to correctly identify the operation of the main power system before powering the Scorpion Backup Guard (SBG) as the battery within the Scorpion Backup Guard (SBG) is only 500mah.

If your main power system is 5V+ then the battery within the Scorpion Backup Guard (SBG) will not be drained and will simply need checking periodically and if stored for long periods stored at 50% capacity.

      Hope this helps,
      Thanks!

Thanks guys; now I know how it works I think I’ve only got one last question.

To charge can I use this lead (below) if I cut off the middle wire from one of the connectors as per MrMel video?

          Warning:
Remember to disconnect it after a flight...... otherwise someone may pick up your heli and inform you the rudder has jammed... This has been known to confuse some people nearly provoking a complete stripdown

Last on, first off according to the manual.

Makes sense as both actions give the pilot chance to check if the BEC is operating correctly.
              Happy Flying! Thanks - Dave

You can use the above lead but I don't see any reason to cut any cables.
The .SBG is a 2s lipo and should be charged and balanced as exactly that, if your charger doesn't support balance lead only charging you will need to make a lead that has a JST 2s socket to a JST 2s plug with a pair of bananas connected to the outer pair of balance wires for the posative and negative main power wires. Very much so like your above para charging lead but with only one female connector.
