  • A British Woman pilot setting world records

    This is very off topic!
My Wife Kathleen set three world records in hang gliding this year.
She flew the first triangular course over 200km by a woman, and a speed record for that course. Then the longest out and return distance by a woman with 230km.
She flew from Ruhpolding in Germany via Pinsgau and Zell am Zee in Austria back to Ruhpolding for the triangle.
The out and return was all in Austria.

That seems some distance so how long timewise did this take...?
Today's outlook is fine for flying.

Cool! I still remember Judy Leden (the then foremost GB female pilot) giving a talk to our Uni hang and para-gliding club in Swansea. I tried hang gliding but wasn't very good at it so stuck to paragliding. Also, I was too lazy to carry the hang-gliders up Rhossilli down! :)

That's brilliant. Well done to your missus. I guess she must have been using thermals to get that distance. It must be like going up in a fast elevator. It would scare the pants off me....

The flights took 7-8 hours. The start is as early as possible from the first cable car in the morning. In fact paragliders are walking up earlier and higher than the highest cable cars to get an earlier start for their record flights!

Judy Leden we know well. She is running pour local hang and paragliding school in Derbyshire and lives in the same village as us.
I went to the universities hang gliding comps in Swansea a few times but that was before paragliding was invented.

There is lots of detail about the flights online:

Or wave clouds, which contain up-draughts to much higher heights than thermals.
