  • My RX7 twin turbo restoration

    Thought I'd start a thread up on this because...well why not? Its a hobby of sorts!

    So anyway, lets rewind nearly 8 years now. I'm 21 years old, I've just landed a fancy new job, and I thought I'd treat myself to an RX7. I had always loved these cars and I found a guy who wish willing to do a swap for my Audi A3 1.8 turbo.

    And here she was when I first got her:

    I loved it to pieces, but wanted to make it better, So i started doing stuff to it! First off was an engine rebuild, the first engine rebuild i'd ever done and done in my garage!

    then, I made some new lights, and put on some new wheels:

    Then came the coilover suspension:

    Upgraded engine internals, intercooler, a few other bits

    I painted that up, and took it on various track days and nurburgring trips, at my peak, lapping in about 8:30 with 300hp (Bear in mind the road car lap record is I think about 7:30 with 500hp+)

    Yes!

    I was hoping it would be an FD! I've seen some lovely examples of these. I've always said it would be one of the few cars I would swap in the Supra for. So what's it like now?? Also, the rotary engine puts me off, so it would have to be replaced with a 1UZ ;) a friend of mine is nearly finished putting a 1UZ in an RX8. That's gunna be awesome.

      She had all the racing interior, snap off steering wheel etc

      By this time with all the track and nurburgring work I was doing with the car, it was pretty highly specced. It had a new intercooler setup

      And various other bits. including AP 6 pot 356mm calipers on the front, R888 semi-slick road legal tyres, coilovers, polybushes, uprated anti roll bar kits, bigger radiator and intercooler, proper seats with 6 point harnesses, it was a great track machine.

      I did so many track days in it that I started to get a bit of a god complex and decided to go take up racing MX5s and show everyone how it was done, keeping both cars. Well, the day came for my first race, and I was dead last. By a LONG way!!! But thats another story...

      During my time of racing and keeping two heavily thrashed cars maintained, the RX7 blew its turbo exhaust gasket at the Nurburgring one year. Not too much of a issue, around a days work realistically to fix, but due to other commitments and lazyness, I never sorted it out. there were a few problems that needed sorting on the car, that I just couldnt be bothered with at the time! (A few oil leaks, paintwork peeling off, wheels in terrible condition due to endurance racing brake pad dust eating away at them, things needed cleaning and polishing and the suspension at the front was weeping oil....) I took the turbos off it, ordered the new gasket and just never fitted any of it back on to the car! This was over three years ago now.

      A friend at the time offered to let me work on the car in his double garage and store it there, so I did, and there it stayed for 1 of the 3 years since it was used. OVer the 3 years its been out of use its fallen slightly into disrepeair, the gear knob has mould, some parts of trim have split, its extremely dirty everywhere etc...Ive got my arse in gear now and sorted some bits out on it

      Tonight we brought it home, and shes sitting outside again. Its nice to see her down there again :)

      I still have lots of things left to do to it before it will actually be driveable, but it moved under its own power again after 3 years tonight :)

        So I did a little more today. The wheels are back, they were supposed to be white with a blue/green flake but it looks a bit more like pepper! Still an interesting finish :)

        I worked on fitting the battery in the boot today as there is no room in the engine bay.... First off pull the carpet back and fit the rivnuts for the tray...

        Then fit the tray and the battery itself... Now I just have to run the cables properly from the starter and earth point!

              Rotary engines arent actually that bad. They are picky, but maintain it well and tune it properly and it'll be golden. The stock cooling setup on FD's is GROSSLY under specced, so much so that they can overheat badly just from spirited driving on public roads. Sort the cooling out and the lifetime increases GREATLY.

              The engine went on this shortly after I got it, I Rebuilt it and have had 35,000 miles of using it for track driving, and sunday night fun only :) SO thats pretty good!

              I wont say they are bullet proof coz I think there may actually be something wrong with mine! But I've certainly not had any real engine issues to speak of. It costs £2500 for a drive in drive out repair by a professional when it does go wrong, and the way the engine sounds, pulls and revs is worth £2500 every 50k any day :)

                    Nice car

                    I had an old rx7 Y reg years ago

                    Loved it apart from the fuel bill, loved it especially in wet or ice/snow was added extra fun !

                    Not a patch on yours but reminded me of days gone by!

                      Always wanted an RX7, I'm not too keen on your bonnet choice but thats a personal preference.

                      The thing that put me off was the running costs of the rotary engine, rebuilds about every 30-60k arnt they? and oil consumtion out of this world?

                      In the end i bought a 3.0 Z4 instead and that was a really nice car, funnily enough that was back when i was 21 too!

                      25 now and i have a boring (but still nice) 118d Coupe and a 328 track car :)

                        Lovely looking car, always did like the rx7 although I went the other way & had a S13 200sx which I fettled with a bit ;)

                          Yeah the fuel bill is pretty horrendous!

                          Oil it uses a fair bit, about 1 litre every 1000 miles, depends how you drive it, the harder you drive, the more it uses. Its a misconception that its a bad thing it uses oil though; The engine actually has oil injectors on it. It uses oil completely by design; Its just because other cars dont that people think the RX7 has a problem when it does!

                          The engines generally need something intrustive doing around 60k, thats the annoying thing about them, they are not maintainence free. The engine might not blow up at 60k but a gasket might go somewhere and you may as well rebuild it while you have it out... They never just self destruct out of the blue if tuned properly. Its normally something else failing, or running them too hot that causes a proper engine failure. Apart from that as I say its stupid things like gaskets!
