  • Plane for dad for Xmas

    Hi all,

My dad has never flown anything rc but keeps asking to fly my foamie. So for Xmas I was thinking of getting him a hyperion Sniper 3D and getting him into the hobby. Obviously he'll need to kit it out over the new year.

Good idea getting him a 3D straight away? I'm a Futaba user so bnf is not an option? I'll get him on the sim first and dial in plenty of expo etc to tame it down.

Ideally needs to be a cheapish famous that can take a light beating. Please make suggestions :)

          Hi,

Check out 'Flyingwings' V Trainer. Ideal beginers model and made of EPP. Also the owner Rob is a top bloke. All made in the UK too.

          Regards,

          Mark.

              3D straight away? NO!

The hyperion Sniper 3D is not a good model to get as a beginner. He will struggle I expect even with low rates and expo.

If you really want to get your dad something HE might enjoy and not something you might enjoy then get him a WOT 4 Foam E. Again, not a beginner model but you can learn on it and it will be good for him once he can fly. One thing is certain... if he has never flown r/c before he won't be doing 3D for quite some time.

              I learned on a WOT4 Foam E and I still have it.

Thanks for this mate. That's the route I was kind of thinking. I'm not sure if he'd even seriously get into the hobby, so it needs to be cheap but be able to take a beating. The EPP planes at £50 don't cost the earth and it's not that likely the electronics would take a beating (other than the motor). I already have an ESC and FrSky FASST Rx kicking about, so I'm thinking of getting him the kit and letting him kit it out as it's built. The WOT4 E as a ARTF would be ideal but looks a little over budget.

I'm thinking if I dial in a lot of expo and lower the rates and give him sim time before the maiden, he should be OK. Failing that I just snatch the Tx off him.

Can I buddy box an 8FG with a 35Mhz FF7? Edit yes I can :) So I'll use my 35Mhz FF7 buddy boxed to my 8FG for the first few flights while I teach the old man to fly.

                    Keep the suggestions coming! :D

fly it high and hand it over 5 mistake high kill power and set it as default with elevator up and just pass the TX around until hes comfortable my flash fly really slow and at slow speeds is unbreakable Even the cheep 9 gram servos are still alive only mod i made was i cut up a ice cream tube lid and make the plastic bit under the landing gear longer gives more strength

Yup, good points. The wot 4 foam looks ideal for him, but it's more than twice my allowed buget (I've been instructed to cut back this year lol).

This why I'm thinking the route you suggested would be good. Make it a Team Turnigy model :D I already have most of the bits need, just need servos, motor and a 30A ESC :)

Don't get me wrong, I will steal a go of whatever I get him, but this is for him 100%. I already have a couple of my own 3D planks and my helis :) I just want it to be the right model, I'm just wondering which foamie is most durable etc.

Buy him a new one from HK for around £60 and spend the left funds on a couple of "extra" batteries if you'll parden the pun please :)

Probs is mate getting anything from hk with 5 days till the big day is a no no.
Shipping times at this time of year are going to be longer. So whatever it is you want to get it will probably have to come from a uk outlet & hence be more expensive. I purchased a wot four foam e this year, I hadn't flown a plane for 5 years since starting my heli addiction. It was a total non event when I took off for the first flight they fly that nicely. I'd say only this to you mate "give your dad a chance" it might be that something 3d able puts him right off flying if he's going to struggle flying it from the off. Only you realy know your dads abilities if you think he can cope go for a large 3d foamy if not get a cheep trainer based balsa model & buddy up with him. It's after all about participation & friendship this hobby & I couldn't think of a better way to get close to a father than modelling.
Best of luck mate in whatever you decide & have a great Xmas.
