A car alternator will cook if used for charging without extra cooling, I saw one smoking once and it only had a pair of 5000,s on it at 10 amps the higher the volts the lower the current.

Yes, I was going to do a 'how to' once its up together and running... I have already made a few mistakes that cost me an alternator....

There is always that fine line between sharing your experiences and looking like an idiot

I spent two hours today cleaning out the carb as it wouldnt start and wasnt getting petrol to the plug. Turns out it helps if you turn the tank tap on

Oh no, you can't say that, we most certainly must ridicule James, it is a given that we take the mickey, right up until it actually works and we want to charge our packs, after that it is a great effort by James as we all have always said.........

Still think it's illegal to tap off a local pylon though

Yeah been looking at this a lot. Was going to try and set something up better for charging off the car. The 12v off the car is the real let down. Cant get the charger to pump out enough. Im using a PL6. 24v is perfect.

              Cheers

Problem with this setup is the noise. I hate noisy generators. If you had half a mile of extension cord and could put it that far away great.

With the UK WIND being like it is, and the requirement for noise reduction, how about this then:- How I built an electricity producing wind turbine

If you are going to DIY wind generator then this is the one for you. Fisher and Paykel smart drive. I had one and the electronics pack up after about a year and it cost more to fix than getting a new one. My mate had a dead one as well so ended up with a couple of motors to play with. They have cool large stepper motors in them. You can rewire so instead of 240v you get 12v or 24v. Could have a stack of old batteries and the field and let this little gem charge them up all week :-)
