  • What Servos ??? Advice needed!!!

    HI Guys

I was hoping that someon maybe able to give me some advice about radio equipment choice.

I am just about to buy a Raptor 50 V2 and i am a little confused as to what type of servo to use for each control.

I have heard lots of talk about analog and digital servos and also diferent speeds etc. From what i understand digital servos offer far greater control and will hold thier position much better and also offer much more tourqe.

What i would like to know is which type of servo best suits which control and why.
I have heard that some use a cheap old analog for the throttle but fast tourqey digital servo for cyclic control.

What would you guys recomend for
    Cyclic inputs
    Throttle inputs
    Rudder inputs
    Collective inputs

(I am not 100% clear on this but i beleive that the Raptors have a separate servo for collective and separate servos for cyclic????)

I would be very greatful if someone could recomend servos for the Rapy 50 bearing in mind limited budgets (as always!)

    Also

I would like to buy a HH gyro which ones would you recomend at a reasonable price ?

Would you recomend a beginner to use a throtte govener from the start or would it be best to learn without then progress onto a govenor, on first apperence they seem ideal for a beginner as its one less thing to wory about whilst learning.

Any help and advice will be gretly recieved

    Many Thanks

    Wazzer

    Hello Ben.
It appears to me that you are just starting getting into flying helicopters, and if so can give you a little advice on what gear to use.
Rather than worry about what is best for this, and that, plump for bog standard equipment like Futaba 3001 servo's or JR 591 until you are sufficiently experienced to make the change to the better and more expensive stuff.
Following my own experiences into learning to fly,I only used the above gear and never had a crash due to any radio failures,in fact I never had any of the standard stuff go down on me.
If you do follow my recommendations, you will find when you do make the change your flying expertise will improve at a stroke, it does make your life so much easier to have the better gear to start your flying with, but should the inevitable crash be a bad one it will make life far less costly to you only having to replace the relatively cheap radio components.
    GOOD LUCK AND GOOD FLYING.

mo's right the JR591's are similar in spec to the S9202 servos from Futaba @ 45.00, yet the JR are about 15.00 each.

Yes the Raptor like most heli's have a seperate servo for each control, while CCPM heli's use a no. of servo's on the swashplate that interact together to give the desired response.

At this stage in the game not so much cheap servo's but servo's that will fit your needs for now, the Raptor 50 can 3D with the most of the big boy's and if you get into serious 3D'ing then yes possible digital maybe the route to go.....My personal experience hasn't been good with digitals so I stick with the S9206 servo's.

If you get the cyclic and throttle servo's the same, saythe JR591's and then buy a GY401 (HH) with either the S9253 or S9254 tail servo's then your done and no-doubt set for a long time bar the few bump's with mother earth.

Stay away from the GV-1 till you've got your engine tuned and flying full circuits. I have one and they are good also the Throttle Jockey has had some good reports, but no GV-1 or Throttle Jockey will work if an engine isn't tuned, if anything it will do more damage as it will mask the mis-tuned engine until it too late and the damage is done.

Let us know what you decide and get some pic into your gallery when your sorted. - welcome to the site and I hope you get the most of it.
      Cheers

I have just put together a Raptor 50 as my 2nd heli I went a little OTT (some would say ) with regards to servo's but I got them cheap

Cyclic is essetially what elevator and aileron are on a fixed wing aircraft, roll left/right and nose up/down.
Collective is the pitch on the rotors which controls the height in hovering or speed in forward flight (if you see what I mean...)

I went for the Futaba GY401 gyro with the 9254 digital servo. This can be had as a package for <140. I would not recommend the 9253 only as it is a discontinued part that is superceeded by the 9254. After speaking to the Ripmax display chaps the other day at a display this is what they recommend to people now. Best bang for buck

I would suggest that 3001's be the minimum servo of choice (148's and 3003 are only good for throttle! I use a 3001 for this). Remember that the Raptor 50 is put through greater stresses due to the larger blade size.

I have gone for digital servos for collective and cyclic (9252's) but only so I never need to upgrade them. 9402's are the coreless version but again are not cheap. 3010's (a higher torque and speed than the 3001) seem to be a popular choice and may be a good place to start. Remember the higher spec the servo's the more current they need (especially with digital's) and so the larger the Rx pack you would need (I have a 3300mah Sub C pack!)

Check out the specs of all Futaba servo's here, http://www.futaba-rc.com/servos/futm0029.html

          HI guys

Thanks for the advice i will no doubt be back for more!!!

Its reassuring to know that i can get away with the standard (cheap stuff) to begin with i guess i would never tell the difference between the good and the bad until i am more experienced.

I am very excited to begin a new hobby after a break from Modeling for about 10 years, Although my friends and girlfriend cant understand why i am so interested in expensive toys!!
But if you have to explain then you would never understand!!!

I have purchased a Reflex sim to begin my learning (i am sure its much cheaper in the long run) But am still waiting for the transmiter to arrive to actually use it. (I bought it as a set complete with a basic 4 channel Tx purley for use with the sim)
It has been so frustrating as i have had the software for over 3 months!!!!

The company i bought it from supplied the wrong unit and it wasnt compatible i am still waiting for the replacment!!!

But as they say patience is a virtue!

          Thanks again guys

            Hi Ben.
Wish you every success with this new venture and hope you have a very understanding girl friend,it is a bit of a bind having that sim and not being able to have any fun with it,you must indeed have a lot of patience, and you are right in the fact that in helicopter flying this is sorely needed.
I cannot comment on the Reflex Sim, but on all accounts it is a very popular choice, I used the Realflight G2 with great success, and as it comes with it's own transmitter, is very easily set up and running in minuets.
With this in mind why don't you do an exchange with the supplier of the Reflex for the Realflight if this is possible, you surely deserve some recompence for the amount of inconvenience you have suffered in receiving wrong items.
Hopefully you will get your sim sorted in the near future, and get hooked on this fascinating hobby, and should this be the case I will welcome you to the world of the rotorbrains.
            GOOD FLYING.

              HI Mo

Thanks for you words of encouragement and for the suggestion of exchanging the Reflex sim for the Real Flight sim

I purposley bought the Reflex on many good recomendations but the convenience of the USB Tx is now very apealing.

I would exchange but there are a few obsticles.

I bought the sim from Helihobby.com in the states whilst visiting reletives recently and brought it back to the UK before trying it out after several weeks of head scratching i finaly wrote to the suppliers and asked for help when they then told me they had supplied the wrong Tx. 8O

Before they would send me a new one they had to receive the old Tx back that was incompatible, So that caused about 3 weeks delay as i refused to pay for express delivery when the Tx is only worth 30 quid 80 quid on post seems a little stupid.

In the meantime i have complicated matters by moving abroad and am now living in Borneo so i have had to wait for Helihobby to send the new Tx to me in Sabah Malaysian Borneo. As you can imagine the postal system out here is not quite a match for the Royal Mail i have been assured that i should receive the new Tx in about another week!!!!!

It is very frustrating and i beleive that helihobby should have sent the replacment Tx with out any question and then if i didnt return the old one they could have charged me for it, But we all have 20/20 with hind sight

One of the benifits of living out here is the cost of the RC Gear i can buy a TT Raptor 50V2 with TT 50 engine Eclipse 7 Radio Gear plus all the rest of the gear to get flying for 550 pounds!!!

So if the mail is a little slow who cares!!!

The only part of the above deal thats not such a bargin is the radio gear i think its the same price in the UK but every thing else is cheap. :?

the Heli and engine alone is 250 pounds!! thats a 50V2 not 30!!!

Thanks for the encouragment and all the help

              Ps Great smiley emotions
got a bit carried away with them on this post :!:

250 for R50 and a TT50 is a good price. Having bought my Raptor 50 in the UK and going for an OS50Hyper I tried to get the best deals possible. 220 for the heli kit, I have seen the OS50Hyper at 140 but I paid a little more because I wanted it immediately (it was or is in short supply in the UK at the mo)
Of course buying the gyro, servo's etc all added up so I guess it cost about 650 all up but I already had the Rx, TJ Pro, and tools etc...

Good luck, look forward to hearing how it goes

                    Hi Chappers.
You must have been called some names in the past, perhaps unfairly, but no one can say you do not come straight to the point.
It suprises me how you have managed to give so many answers to problems in so few words.
If I did not know differently, I would think you were blunt.
