  • Pitch Gauge

Just ordered up a Robart Pitch Gauge which seems to be the Rolls Royce of the pitch gauge world.
After putting 4 tanks through the new Raptor at the weekend I am concerned that I dont have enough +ve pitch. My cheap gauge is showing +11 so either the +ve is more like 7-8 or my head speed is too low (TJ Pro should be holding 1750)

    Hi Rob,

If you are refering to your raptor 50 you will find it performs better with a higher head speed, something like 1850 - 1900 is where they are most happy.

By all means check the pitch, but assuming you had the flat edge of the pitch gauge parallel with the flybar when you took the reading, it wont be that far out.

Also if you dont have enough pitch at the top it will feel saggy, make sure you have +10, with that, and the higher head speed it will be pretty lively.

    Cheers,

    Pete.

it will seem like you dont have enough headspeed when u have too much pitch too. Try setting it up for +9, thats the max it should be anyways, because the engine has less work to do and will therefore run faster.
      Hope this helps

I have set it up with +11 and -10 degrees as per the manual (in Idle up 2), Idle up 0, Idle 1 and Throttle Hold has +9 to -5.

I guess the head speed is just too low, have yet to confirm the actual rpm but the maths based on the 8.5:1 gear ratio on the TJ Pro gives a speed of 1750ish. Will raise both the settings up a bit to 1800 and 1900 and see what they are like. I will tone down the + and - pitch to 9 for the initial tests as well.

        thanks for the advice

SMC have come up trumps again as I received the pitch gauge this morning Service there never fails to impress me (same as Skyline, Mindland, Revolution etc etc... in fact there dont seem to be too many bad places these days!). At <40 I am happy and the unit seems to be excellent quality and is obviously far more accurate than my other unit. I like the flybar spirit level and locking tool. None of the other items I looked at had this but then they were all cheaper.

Spent some time last night playing with the pitch settings to get +10 -9 but am struggling to get this pitch range without the servo arm ending up at a bad angle. Am going to start affresh this evening so will hopefully sort it, might put on a larger servo arm (X type) to reduce the servo movement with ATV.

Also confirmed that I have no binding on the pitch with full cyclic, had to turn down the ATV on Cyclic to 72% though. I believe that this is a common problem with too much cyclic.
