  • Turning by banking

I have noticed a definate flaw in my flying, i never turn using any bank and thus cannot fly fast or in full control. (All i do is slow the heli down and turn on the rudder)
I have been considering the best ways to learn to turn properly, should i just go for it? What sort of height, speed etc would i need?
I think im also a bit wimpy with my heli, for obvious reasons (EXPENSE)

Most people go from the hover to doing lazy eights. These start off as flat rudder turns but can be developed into quite large and exagerated banked turns, depending on your skill level. The point you have reached in your flying ie banked turns, causes some people a lot of concern because prior to this the last thing you wanted your heli to do was lean over. Go back to lazy eights or if you are confident in the hover and have not tried them give them a go.

If it's not fun, your not doing it right !!

Whe I first started normal forward flight I was flying a standard gyro and this allows the tail to follow the turn round. With heading hold what happens is the tail stays locked so you need to manually use the rudder in the turn to bring the tail round. It may help to turn off HH (if an option) if you dont want to worry about turning the tail when starting you banked turns.

You do not need to have a large amount of forward speed to bank turn, my lazy 8's are slow and controlled but not flat.

If you can hover well then you wont have any problems moving into forward flight, take it step by step.
