hi All and hopefully some well informed Raptor fliers.I have a raptor 30 that was converted to a 50 or a 50 that had a thundertiger 39 in it when i bought it many years ago.Did my first inverted with it and flew it for a year until I got the trex 600 nsp.The raptor has spent some years in the garage as a shelf ornament until recently as one of my members is learning to fly helis .He is doing very well Hes older than me so that tells you a lot lol .He took it away and checked every over brought it back and I did a test flight and it flew as it should unfortunately the second flight it threw a link .no major damage but we need to replace the main gear thats where the confusion lies. The main gear has 85t and pinion has 10t but i have seen ones with 96t and 11 t pinon so I am not sure which one it should be as when i bought it the 85 was in it already.any thoughts please.

Do some homework Brin this is from memory and counting the teeth on what I think is a R50 gear in my shed

    but IIRC
R50 had 10 tooth pinion and 85 main gear (mine has 85)
R30 had 9 tooth pinion and 86 main gear

Ron I did some homework but there are variations .It says 85t on the gear and 9t as you say but the meshing look very sloppy with that setup thats why i wanted to know if thats correct.Do the pinons vary in diameter or just in spacings.

Yeah with the 9 tooth pinion you need the 86 tooth main gear. They designed it so that the mesh is good with the 10 tooth pinion and 85 tooth main and the 9tooth pinion with the 86 tooth main gear. The Hirobo Sceadu had a similar setup where the same frameset could accomodate either a .30 or a .50.

The .30 engines rev to around 19K rpms and the .50 engines rev to about 17,500 rpm for peak power.

If you have a .50 engine in it now you'll probably want the 10 tooth pinion. I may have one around here somewhere.

Now look what you made me do Brin! Dug out my old R50 and rebuilt it. Just flown it out the back of home.First time I've flown anything in a couple of years.Went for a quick test and before I knew it the tank was empty.

I think you just needed an excuse to dig it out Ron lol But it does look good .Hopefully it will inspire you to get back out there and fly.

Your original post had me digging in my shed, counting teeth Brin! I realised I had a raptor airframe that had never flown. so I dug it all out today, found and refurbished an old 50 hyper with bearings. Found some jr digital servos and believe it or not a good old Futaba 401!(was going to use a spartan 760 but after logging on the website thought better of it. too complicated for adjusting on the fly), spent today cleaning, building and fettling and tonight it flew beautifully. Practically hands off hover with just a few clicks of trim.Well chuffed. its even got rescue mode paddles!

until now I had completely lost the mojo. I had plans for the body but just could not get motivated.

your post got me digging which in turn got me motivated. I'll buy you a drink at AIR
