When I was doing my apprenticeship we would use the old copper lump on a gas stove. This was for new wiring jobs before the other services had been provided.

Electricity was available back then but in new premises us telephone boys usually got their first.

(keep a look out for a cheap PTO rotorvator, a multigang garden lawnmower and a decent 1.5-3ton digger - but they all have to be cheap for a poor retired chap who has too much land to look after that doesn't earn an income)

Perhaps The Barley Pickers from Scrap Heap Challenge could help you out!

Might have a Rotorvator upstairs awaiting re-conditioning, i assume by multi-gang you mean the triple cylinder Hayter type??

I keep seeing stuff on ebay but obviosuly condition may be lied about and I'm ignorant about deisel engines and hydraulics..
Tractor is 43Hp so 4-5ft cat 1 linkage - soemthing you can still get spares for or get new parts made cheap. It wonlt get use dthat much but doing 1/4 acre with a walk behind is seriously tedious..
I use a Husquy Ride-on for the lawns and takes 6-8hrs.. so something with 3-5 gangs that one can lift out of the way to get round trees etc is my ideal..soemthing like an old but functional ransome 'cos the john deers are silly spares prices - or perhaps a fuctional set of mechanicals one could tow behnd the quad bike..but the petrol tow arrays can be a mare to pull start. Get the bulk done with that and finish with the ride-on. There;s lots of islands of trees and the tractor and toper would just chew up the lawns let alone the problems of navigating the obstacles....

Even better - pop down for a fly and a see...you must have your licence back by now.

You guys have the mental capacity of a clam when it comes to soldering. One of those irons couldn't heat water to the point of evaporation. How are you going to get an EC5 and a piece of 10awg warm enough to make a dry joint will not know (sorry you rolled it first)...

If you want an iron up to the job you will need a 60W Weller or equivalent they will get hot enough to put EC5's on comfortably with lead free. Precision I hear you say then you need an Oki Metcal PS-900 they are also 60W but with a tip that's as small as 0.25mm they will do all the small stuff you can throw at it.

Think about it before you make our choice you can either buy right and once or you can try fixing agricultural machinery (which when I last looked helis arn't) with relics from Fred Flintstone's junk box (one or two seem to have access to this) When it comes to all things electronic lend your ear to those who seek to mislead and confuse with tale of such things when reading from the book of google when the internet has yet to reach our worlds most outlying places....To quote a phrase from an esteemed member "If turds had square corners your ass would go clang every time one appeared" (I can hear a lot of clanging)

I believe the correct iron for EC5 soldering has already been posted. This thread was nothing about EC5s when it started though; it was just about a soldering iron that some might be interested in.

For the occasional user the Metcal has a stupid price just like helicopters.

When in the middle of a new industrial estate when there is no electricity available those old copper lumps over a gas stove is all we had to use and I can assure you the solder flowed every bit as good using that as it has when I have used a Metcal.

I think the rest of this thread is just fun in general.

                    Happy New Year.

                    p.s. Enjoy your shit!

I do like a clear statement of belief
However there's 2 things i don't understand here - why i should have any need to solder EC5's and how a turd with square corners can cause clanging.? Is someone making the assumption that i have a brass or bronze ar$e or are my square turds made of resonant faeces? Or perhaps some sexually transmitted disease that leads to anal clappers?........

...if it wasn't piddling down with the wet stuff I'd fill a tank with nitro, plug in my deans connected 2S lipo and go fly. Oh, and i soldered that on with a mini lighter gas torch...

I vote resonant faeces. Is there anyone here that resonates with faeces?

That looks like a pretty brilliant machine. You should be able to solder anything with that.

That's what I'm hoping would be great to replace those burnt out fets and be able to replace board parts as well
