  • life/lipo rx power on 550

After a few issues with a talon (but thats another story), I have put the standard align 70a esc back on the 550 as a temporary get me flying measure (not here to debate align esc issues either!)

If I had a life pack sitting around, then I would use it in conjunction with the align 70a esc as a bit of an added safety measure, plugged straight into the fbl unit, but I dont.

what I do have though is a couple of 2s lipos and an elyq regulator from the 600 nitro.....

the regulator has the big messy wiring issue, and I was wondering if there's any reason why I cannot simplify things a bit........

The reg has a dedicated 5v rx output port, and programable servo output ports (6v chosen currently). I am using an ar7200bx fbl unit which will take a power supply of between 3.5v to 8.5v in any open port.
Is there any reason why I cannot simply run one (or two) power supply wires from the 6v servo output ports on the reg straight into the spektrum beast x, and power all the electronics this way, as you do with a life pack, (with main pack power wire pulled from the esc servo plug) ?????

this might be one for the electronics geeks amongst us to tell me why not? I can of course wire it the way of the elyq manual as i have with the nitro, but I was just curious about the simple mothod above?

    help if you can pease

On all my 550FBL, 600EFL PRO and Goblin 700, I run a direct Life into the Gyro/Rx. The 550s and 600 have AR7200BX, the Goblin a VBar. Of course, I disconnect the RED wire from the ESC where required.
Been there and done that, but never stop learning.
Now too many Helis to mention?

hark back to those days at school, sitting in an exam room, writing an answer...... only then to realise what you had written did not infact answer the question..... oh no! no marks, you failed the exam.

I would think you could. You will of course be using a 2S lipo with that setup.
You will need to remove the red wire from the ESC.
Run a servo wire from reg to Rx. Better still run 2. Make sure they are all the same voltage I.e. fom the servo output of reg and not the Rx or rudder output as that will be at 5V.

Oops. You are right. Read the question FULLY before answering. I can only put it down to my age.

Personally, I think this is the right answer. I too run a 1300mah LiFe on my 550 and will do the same on my 90s shortly (probably a pair of 1300s on them). Honestly, for the sake of about £10, just buy a LiFe pack and be done with it - no messy wiring or extra weight or complication from regulators etc.

you could always convert it to flybar.....then the Align ESC would be fine on its own

seriously, if you want to keep the wiring simple, why not invest in a quality ESC with integrated BEC like the YGE 90A LV or Kontronik 100A LV ?

well after today, thats now 20 plus flights wth the standard esc on 550 blades and it works so bolox to any castle products in the future. I am in the budget market (hence talon) and align with or without elyq reg...... and as for the yge/kontronic.... well its a case of dream on I'm afraid! love to but to pricey. I take it you cant answer the req querry also?

how many flight do you get with a 1300mah then before changing/charging?

i've never used a regulator on an electric model but if the output is 6V and your FBL will accept it (as it seems in your original post) i cannot see a problem.

i'm a clone/budget flyer myself so have kept my 550 V1 flybarred with the original Align 70A ESC using the built in BEC.....it just works. i am currently putting together a FBL 550 and was going to try the Talon but i dont think i'll bother now. it'll be a budget ESC (OPTO) with a separate BEC i think as i dont want to bother with charging an Rx battery

                        i get 3 x 8min flights on my FB 600n with a 1900 mAh 2S lipo
