  • Syma 9093 DragonFly

Someone has asked me to make a good heli out of two Syma 9093 DragonFlys. One of the batteries was left switched on, there are no instructions or chargers. I've tracked down a video of one flying and things look even worse. It seems to be able to take off and land. Does anyone have one that works that they would like to donate to a new flyers wife who is convinced she has got a useful bargain. I can collect from Bracknell area.

If it is the same helicopter that I had (yellow canopy, 35Mhz and fixed pitch) it is pretty useless and very difficult to fly, as the speed controller has only three settings low, medium and flat out and it needs something between medium and flat out to hover. Eventually gave mine to someone who wanted the motors.

I would seriously suggest scrapping them both and save yourself some heartache.

Very sensible advice, unfortunately the person who picked these up off freecycle thinks that they have a bargain. I've seen the videos which are a brilliant bit of deception. Thanks for the info on the speed controller, I hadn't thought they could be that bad. One of the battery plugs is corroded together as well.

Most of these were originally bought from market vendors or as a 'special purchase' by Maplin for sale in their Christmas toy department at £29.99, which sort of hints to their capability as flying machines. I tried for weeks with mine and messed around with various values of resistor in series with the main motor in an attempt to reduce the full power to a more acceptable level but to no avail, plus the thing rather enjoyed doing random pirouettes in either direction because it has no gyro and the tail motor speed seemed to be only very loosely connected to the main rotor speed.

I did during my time playing find a source on E bay for spares but again these were limited then to canopy, blades, tail feather and the main shaft (which I am convinced was made by Thorntons as it bent very easily - and even during transit). So to sum it up, mine was a big pile of poo and a total waste of £29.99, although my wife appreciated the peace and quiet she had whilst I spent hours fiddling with it.

        Have fun!!

It seems to be better if it gets you out the house. Now how do I tell someone that they have been done, even when they got it off freecycle for nothing.

You could say......"you know those two little helicopters you gave me to see if I could get them to fly? They've got a well known technical problem with them, the technical term is they're f****d"
