The tail servo does connect to the gyro. Otherwise the tail will not stay in one place. Did you setup your radio for the swashplate type you need for the zoom400? I think that will get your troubles away.
Could be that some other guy's can explane it a little better in the Queen's language. I can explane in dutch but you wouldn't get any where.
Cheers

I've set mine up for a Futaba FF6 radio and followed the Futaba manual which shoed how to set up the transmitter and where everything plus in. Does the Sanwa set have similar instructions. The FF6 was quite helpful also in setting the throttle/pitch mixing and swashplate type.
Note you have to set this transmitter to Heli but I would have thought the Sanwa would be the same., and this automatically links the throttle and pitch together.
You are correct with the Gyro, Gyro to rudder output on reciever, rudder (or tail) servo to Gyro.

The gyro and rudder now appear to be working correctly, the pitch control still does not control Ive have set according to the manual which is centre it on another channel and mount the horn, this may be incorrect Im wondering wether I should set the throttle to 0% and then fit the horn. Is there then an overide to operate the pitch from the Sanwa or is it fully automatic

Hi,
It sounds to me like the transmitter is in Aero mode and as such is trying to operate the pitch channel (No 6) as though it was the flaps on a fixed wing aircraft. In which case channel 6 will either be up or down and not controllable by the throttle stick.
To change this press the CH+ button to scroll through the menu's until you get to the one that says ETC. Then press the FUNCTION button to scroll through the menu until you get to the option that says TYP. It will most likely be set to AERO, by pressing the CH+ button again you can change it to HELI. Once you have done that the screen with flash the word YES, confirm this by pressing the INC+/YES button. Once you have done that by pressing the END button you will be returned to the screen with the model number and the transmitter voltage displayed and youre done.
Have a look at the section on how to select model setups, which I believe is on page 18 of the manual. This will give you a graphical representation of the description I have given you above.
I hope this helps.
Cheers,
