Gaming helps with heli flying ?

Morning Guy's, something crossed my mind today, i have been an avid gamer for many years now, playign many First person shooters ( FPS ) on the PC and other platrorms as well as others. Game such at Unreal Tournament 2003 ( very fast pace you win the game with that 0.01 reaction to get the kill ) and battlefield 2 ( I used to fly a Heli for my Team in tournaments ( very delicate manovering for long range missile shots, and smooth control required at all times ). My second role in most games was as a sniper, and playing FPS of any calibre is all about reaction time / accuracy.

Now of course i understand that flying a rc heli is completly different to a Heli in a game, or shooting at someone in a game, but it seems like the " skills " aquired from years of gaming ( an hour or so after work before i fall asleep ) and the hand to eye coordination required to play at a competition level, should be at least somewhat portable or usefull when flyign an rc ?

Yes and no

The reaction time thing will sort of help but when you have a heli and it gets out of your comfort zone (orientation wise) there is no reset button like games

I myself have been an avid gamer since the heady day's of the sinclair spectrum and flying rc helis and FPS gaming are to entirely different kettles of fish. Hand eye co-ordination is important to both but you don't ever get that fear factor in games that you do when you prize possesion is liable to plummet to the ground in a big expensive heap if you make one small error .

Go and buy 'Phoenix' simulator and see how you get on. £90 quid, well worth it if you intend to fly RC helicoperters.

Well that is not exactly truw, i play Massivly Multiplayer Online Games also, I have items in that game worth over 1000 USD and everytie i kill someone when i shoudl not, i stand the chance of dropping it on the floor. But of course i know what you mean.

Reaction time is a very small factor. This was covered a couple of years back on topgear where clarkson played tennis with greg rusedski and clarkson was being nailed everytime by his serves. Clarkson asked why the same thing doesn't happen to greg when another player serves fast at him & he said it is all down to anticipation. Slowed down you could see greg began to move and prepare for the return of serve miles ahead of the actual ball arriving.

The same principal applies to most things that require fast responses, it's actually the process of anticipation and not reaction time that makes us able to respond how we do and therfore you will find that most peoples reaction times are very similar, even the likes of schumacher & hamilton et al are not so diffrent from ourselves.

Hi guys , i reckon its alot to do with knowing what's going to happen when you do something and already starting to to prepare to input the next correction, having a good idea of what is going to be needed, so as has already been said 'pratice pratice pratice on the sims, its got a reset button and get a good sim at that!

Natch... Personal opinion.
I ran with a semi-pro Counter Strike team playing in Europe for a while and still found the Heli difficult.
The only simularity I would say is the simple fact that practice makes perfect. Unless you are virtually brain dead hand eye co-ordination is something we all have. Spatial awareness and sensory feel for a remote object either in a virtual world or in a real one is something that perhaps you adapt to slightly quicker but I can honestly say I don't think you acquire any specific advantages other than working remotely.

Hehe, i used to Pro Play UT2003, i have Soem CS:S Tourny comps under my belt, but never really been that into it.

We were ranked 1st for 3 months in UT2003 iCFT 2004

i used to play rc stunt copter on ps1 when i was about 10. i think that helped

I used to be an avid gamer, me n hubby had our own server at one point. I just found that I was cr*p at shooting people so just stuck to spammin the forums!! Would like to fly the sim, but when hubby gets off it the kids are fightin over who gets to go next.

Have been, and still am, an avid gamer. Yes, I am sure it helps withn reaction times etc. But, and it's a big 'BUT', it will be of no help if you are just a cra* pilot like me
