  • Anyone near Shrewsbury flying Quadcopter ?

OK, i bought a Gaui 500x and i really just cannot seem to get it to even hover without it going wrong!

Ive never flown anything like this before, and so i could understand its not easy and i couldnt just pick it up straight away, but ive got to grips with flying on the simulator, and the real thing just seems nothing at all like that

I just wondered if there is anyone near me in shrewsbury that has something like this, or experience, that would be willing to just see if its even set up correctly and working. at least if i saw someone else being able to fly it then i would be able to admit that its just me !

    Cheers

      Hi, McVideo. Some questions:

      Did you build it yourself?
Did you program the ESC's with Dual Rates at 100% and Servo Travel at 100%?
Make sure that after the ESC's are programmed (they give a little tune) that you reduce Throttle Servo Travel to maximum 80%.
Is the arrow on the flight controller pointing in the direction of flight?
Is the + X switch set to the configuration you are flying in?
Is the HOVER CRUISE switch set to C (cruise)? It's easier to hover in Cruise mode.
Have you lowered your Dual Rates on aileron and elevator to about 60%? At 100% these things are flighty buggers. You need to dumb it down.
Are the motors going the right way and are the propellors mounted the right way?
      Is the gain set correctly?

What exactly happens on take off?

That's all I can think of for now. I did see a video that was listed as Day 1, Day 2 etc., and the guy was really struggling at first and was crashing lots. They are not as easy as they look but the hover does actually come quite rapidly with a quad. Not so easy on a heli.

Hope that helps. Shame I'm so far away.

      Freya.

It was bought ready to fly, i have never had anything like this before, so i didnt fancy trying to put one together myself
The direction can only be in the X on this one i believe, not the + so thats all ok, however its interesting to note that you say it hovers easier in cruise than in hover ? obviously i have it in the 'begginers' mode of Hover

When you try to hover, it just seems to not want to go straight up, always seems to want to lift one side more than the other and start to tip over before its really got off the floor, which i know these things are not going to be easy to use, but i have seen videos where people have them hovering and have let go of the controls, so it surely cannot take too much effort to get it to do something as simple as hover 2 ft from the floor?

Its got a GU-344 gyro system if that makes it any easier to think of potential problems ( apart from pilot stupidity, which i am not willing to admit just yet )

Make sure that you plug it in on a level surface and then let it initialise.
I had a 330x that behaved the same way as yours till i found out i was causing it by plugging it in upside down and the putting it on the floor

What Paul said. Also, like most things with a 3-axis gyro, they don't like a prolonged lift off. If it wants to get into the air and you are being timid at applying power the quad will be wanting to right itself in one direction or another. Since the body can't tilt it applies more power to try and correct itself until it wants to flip. You are better off bringing the motors to speed and sort of punching into the air, not a large amount but a decided push up on the throttle.

Check on the 'net, hover setting is poor.

Don't let go of the controls, my DJI F450 lets you in attitude mode because it self levels. The Gaui doesn't. Manual mode on my DJI is the same mode yours runs in and they don't recommend letting the sticks go.

Can you post a GOOD close up of your flight controller with arrow pointing to the right please.

              This what your after ?

Yes i have to admit, on the simulator it is easier to just go for it and push the thing up quickly, not so much on the real thing for the first time, but i will take into account what you say

And dont worry, i dont plan to let go of the controls, but i just thought if someone can do it, i must clearly be doing something wrong !

I think a switch to the Cruise mode is a good starting point for further attempts anyway!

Gain pot looks ok at 8 o'clock. Prefer 9 o'clock on mine.

It could also be that the ESC's are not properly set to 100% on all four.
Turn the gain pot all the way anti-clockwise. Don't apply a lot of force, it turns quite gently and will stop on an end stop.
Turn your transmitter on and when it has booted up put the throttle to full. Do make sure, first, that dual rates and servo travel are at 100%.
connect battery to quad. I think you wait for a beep or two (check manual) and then move throttle to zero. Await a merry little tune from the ESC's then disconnect the battery. Restore servo travel on throttle up to 80% and and dual rates you had set. Turn the gain pot clockwise till about 9 o'clock position. It should now be ready.

                Freya.
